Contrast this with the giddiness at the top of the bubble, even with the distant rumbles in the economy (back in 2007) coverage was very optimistic in general. (I realize that I am stating the obvious.)

True.
One issue here though is that if today the news were to try to be optimistic, where would they be able to locate news about state and local governments with budget surpluses, employers hiring large numbers of people at good-paying jobs, rising home prices etc.? U can make up bullish government stats that R supposedly amalgamated from different sources, but U can't report individual company events or local government events that R not actually happening.

"The economy is gradually getting better, so it's ok to buy stocks. BUT
It's not so good that we'll need to raise rates, so you can buy bonds and treasuries, too."
As for me, I must be a masochist, because I went out and bought some call options on inverse-Nasdaq and inverse-small cap ultra-bear funds. It feels like it's the dumbest thing I've ever done, so I'm hoping that means I'm on the right track.
Also, it's too bad the Nasdaq closed down by a mere point on Friday. If it hadn't, I believe this would be a record number of up days for the market.

Totally. I died and my friend who sent it to me died. Cried, rolled around, gasped for air. I think there's a gene for it, and that it's definitely carried on the Y chromosome, because neither of our wives "got it." They were both like, "Why's this so funny?"
I can't explain it - it just is. Really funny.

The economy doesn't have much or anything to do with the stock market or asset markets.
