MrHanky Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 I think the only job of the fed is to make EVERYONE look like a fool.We have had equity outflows almost every week for 6 months, yet we continue to make new highs. Now,individual investors and hedge funds are chasing everything that moves.Selling low and buying high again?

With more and more ETF & futures product created, are the these counted in your final tally?
MrHanky Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 How are you tracking the equity outflow? With more and more ETF & futures product created, are the these counted in your final tally? I forgot where i read it a few days back,an article stated we have had only 2 or 3 weeks of equity inflows since august.....Not even sure how it was calculated,I will see if i could find it.
MrHanky Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 Here is one for mutual funds..... ICI reports that for the week ending December 28, $5.2 billion left stock mutual funds. That makes about $24 billion in outflows in the month of December. April was the last month with positive inflows. http://www.cnbc.com/...ty_Mutual_Funds
MrHanky Posted January 10, 2012 Author Report Posted January 10, 2012 FWIW muni's had 10 or 11 months of outflows but they are on fire now.So take it for what it is.

April was the last month with positive inflows. http://www.cnbc.com/...ty_Mutual_Funds I have read somewhere before that some of these outflows are accurate contrarian indicators i.e. that the public takes their money out of equities at the bottom far more often than they buy at the bottom. Anyone know for sure whether that is so? It's difficult to separate commonly believed superstitions about the market from ones that have actual data to support them. Folks often state their beliefs as thought they are proven fact, and then you look back at some charts and find that the indicator they refer to is far far more often wrong than right.

Grand Poopercycle Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Still, rally seems rather wheezy and erratic, having to fight its way higher. In a true cyclical bull, as recently as '10 into '11(never mind '09, '03-'06 or the 90's) market moves up smoothly day/day and week/week, and typically 'hour of power' sees strengthening into closes. Not this rally. One long time observers opinion.
zero_value Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 FWIW muni's had 10 or 11 months of outflows but they are on fire now.So take it for what it is. This is where I am getting a disconnect, Macro Stock market Money Flow has been net NEGATIVE over the past several quarters to the tune of $100.6 billion US dollars according to Trim Tabs. This is roughly 1% of total market value while overall stock markets have gained roughly 12% last quarter. There must be some other support, vehicle or flow that is not being reported. Doc mentioned ECB maybe these flows are not being accounted for by TT.

I kinda stopped following them since the market didn't seem to care.... it's like "whah whaaaa wha whaaaaa whah" http://www.zerohedge.com/news/retail-investors-pull-140-billion-equity-funds-2011-which-close-year-19-consecutive-outflows
DrStool Posted January 10, 2012 Report Posted January 10, 2012 Mutual fund flows are an infinitesimal part of overall trading. They have limited usefulness. Trimtabs is full of crap most of the time in my opinion. If you want to know what the market is going to do you have to track the casinos that own it and their bankers. That's what I do for you in the Fed Report. I know that most of you already subscribe, but for those lurkers who do not, if you are are serious investor or trader, I think that you will find this information if not indispensable, at least somewhat helpful in understanding context.
