Now, why would 2 Democrats (so far) vote in favor of the draft? Are they trying to give the Republicans ammo? WTF?!?

Twig, the bill, which I just learned that it was for military AND civilian service for

National Defense, was written some months ago by some Democrats for the

reasons given in my prior post.

So what you see are the sponsors of the bill voting for it and everybody else

against. Some of the co-sponsors of the bill backed out of that position during

the debates.

However, many voices in the debate part said they must have a debate later

on how to resolve the manning issues of our military.

a-Google-ing we go?

draft conyers

draft rangel

Rangel & Conyers brought the issue up several months ago- at least it?s coming out of the shadows. I don?t see how any Congressional bill that did not have generous exemptions for the offspring of their influential patrons could pass. Probably Congress will pass this steaming potato to the executive after suitably obfuscating the issue. ?Wind-surfer Syrian terrarists are poised to invade- must have draft? Must fight them over there? More bodies... Hard work??

PHM slashes home prices ...

-------------

Pulte, headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., cut prices in 18 of 23 southern Nevada developments it markets under the Pulte name, and all four of its Del Webb division communities in the Las Vegas and Henderson area.

"The supply and demand equation has changed," said Sheryl Palmer, Nevada area president for Pulte Homes. "That's simple economics."

Pulte price reductions ranged from 5 percent to 28 percent, with most in the 10 percent range, Palmer said. One Pulte home originally priced at $593,000 had been reduced to $425,000 and one home in Sun City Anthem was reduced from $656,000 to $499,000.

The liberal dems did it to wake up the lazy war protesters.

For the same reason, many republicans are afraid of the Draft;

And correctly so, for if it is passed,

'05 will make the sixties look like the fifties.

(There is a Draft thread in LOB.)

No Draft, No Peace- Rangel and Conyers are right

This article covers most of the issues fairly thoroughly, if idealistically. Still can?t see Jenna&Jenna in 70# of gear dodging RPGs? They'd be needed stateside for War Bond drives, bacon grease collection rallies, etc...

The existence of this volunteer force has encouraged much of the U.S. citizenry to disassociate themselves from the consequences of their franchise. They are spectators, having invested nothing more in the ghastly dramas unfolding upon the world than their tax dollars and vague, sports fan-like notions of national prestige. They have opted-out of responsibility for crimes perpetrated in their name. No longer liable to become citizen soldiers, Americans act less and less like citizens of any kind. Collectively, they have become a threat to humanity at large - including their oblivious selves.

[?]

The Pentagon believes it has the war machine it needs to wage two major and several

minor conflicts simultaneously. They want no part of a draft force, because citizen soldiers are anathema to an imperial military. Generals seldom share such thoughts with the public, but War Party civilians like Rep. John McHugh (R-NY), ?[say] "My read at this time is that there is not a lot of enthusiasm or support for it, either within the civilian community or perhaps most importantly within the military services themselves.'' ?. Universal service is at the top of the Pentagon's list - of things it does not want.

[?]

The generals have good reason to be confident that they will enjoy free rein abroad. Americans don't care who they kill. "As far as I can see, Americans don't care about foreign casualties," said John Mueller, an expert on U.S. public opinion about war. "When we ask people point-blank in polls, they say it does matter. But the polling evidence suggests it really doesn't in the end," ?
