The question is how long they can keep up an appearance of sanity and what shape a more severe downturn will take. For many people the collapse has already taken place. I read someone's description of downtown Portland, Oregon, the other day. He was describing how well dressed and groomed the dumpster divers are now and how instead of the dumpsters being singularly occupied, there are now several yuppy divers going through the contents, at the same time. "Armegedden" is an individual and collective problem but also a perceptual one unfolding in different ways across a wide spectrum of events, through time.
