But what I do know is this - life, all life, is about asking questions, not about knowing the answers. It is wanting to see what's over the next hill that keeps us all going. We have to keep asking questions, wanting to understand. Even though we know we'll never find the answers, we have to keep on asking the questions." - - - December 13, 2002; November 30, 2003 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .www.bbc.co.uk Steven Spielberg's TAKEN: Episode Nine: "John" - Sunday, Nov. 30 at 7/8C. Guest yobob1
As I survey the economic landscape we have just traversed (Q3) I keep asking myself, can it get any better? What will they cough up for Q4? 10% growth in GDP? Create 200,000 jobs a month? Profits up 20%?. Hard to say , but they will come up with something to point to. Like any of you could (or should) care they have delayed the finalized release of Al's Holy Grail, productivity, for 2002, until somewhere around the end of Q4/beginning of Q1. It was supposed to be out this past August, but apparently they spilled a Coke on the calculator. Perhaps that's what they will hit us with: "Productivity up 98% as the two remaining workers are now working 24/7 for less money." The distortions in the economy are getting worse, not better. Grande' commercial property schemes are becoming more common than in the past 2 years. I suspect this is where the banks are pooring (sic) their efforts for returns. We sure need some more see-throughs, half empty hotels and lord knows we are practically without any available retail space. I smell blood at WaMu. It looks to me like they want to raise cash and damn fast. Why? Somebody having a derivative "accident" in a full diaper? Insiders increased selling to a near 60 to one ratio as opposed to the most recent 36 to one. Lots of confidence at the top apparently. Now get out there and borrow some money you damn sheeple or the whole ball of wax is screwed. One other little tidbit, is there seems to be great anticipation for tax refunds this year. I'm thinking that the checks that Bushco recently passed out were an advance against the coming refunds. Anybody know for sure?
Hiding Bear
One other little tidbit, is there seems to be great anticipation for tax refunds this year. I'm thinking that the checks that Bushco recently passed out were an advance against the coming refunds. Anybody know for sure? The answer is yes - for those with children qualfiying for the child tax credit. This would be avialable to couples making less than $150M. In general, new withholding schedules went into effect during the year that return most of the tax cuts right away to salaried workers. Due to some delays getting the tax cuts going, the refunds next year should be slightly bigger. There was also business tax cuts put into effect that produced almost immeadiate benefits. The US government came close to getting $0 in corporate taxes on an annual basis for a few months earlier this year. Thankfully a few companies, like major oils, are still paying significant taxes to offset the refunds of others.
Yellowstone
From todays wsj: wsj link CSFB Called An 'Enabler' Of Enron Fraud By ANN DAVIS Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL A report this week on Credit Suisse First Boston's role in the Enron affair puts the bank in company it would rather not keep: on a short list of Wall Street firms considered by a bankruptcy examiner to be key enablers of the massive fraud. The bank had avoided being singled out in August, when the court-appointed examiner released reports on six of the failed energy company's bankers: Citigroup Inc., J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Merrill Lynch & Co., Deutsche Bank AG, Barclays PLC and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, some of which have reached settlements with various investigators while others defend their conduct. Bottom line in wsj story: CSFB declined to comment on alleged bias in research, other than to say that it has since reached a $200 million settlement with securities regulators over alleged conflicts of interest between bankers and anal cysts. my bottom line: crime pays good

Let me summarize: 1) Other than an asteroid hitting Manhattan, nothing will take this market down. 2) Lower stock prices is not an option. Failure of the Grand Experiment is not an option. 3) Any and all redemptions, crashes, liquidations will be backstopped by the Fed. 4) Maniacal TICK readings (footprint of government buy programs) are now an everyday occurrance. 5) Any decline of more than 50 points in an hour is checked by a Steve McQueen Stick Save.
