Iraq is about to go helter skelter. Seems that over half of the Iraq government resigned over the US fighting and some governors and police officials are considering open revolt.

playing devils advocate here:  how do you substantiate hedge funds are sitting flush w/ cash?  i believe the reverse is true.  they are just jumping from stock to stock or from one market to the next.

Annectdotal but I could be reading too much into it. You're probably right and they're all jumping into DELL right now judging by ah. Personally I'm a little puzzled by DELL's bullish statements. Either they're lying, they're the last to know, or I'm totally wrong about the economy.

Dell has the best PC business model of all US manufacturers, and they have for the last decade. It's no surprise that they are crushing the competition on the race to zero bound. This is not a reflection of the economy, this is a reflection of the utter stupidity and hubris of HP to assume that there was room to compete. It's about price, and the low cost producer is Dell. They are the best of a dying breed. Hardware is toast.

[It's just unfortunate that Chavez isn't threatening to use nukes against us from Venezuela, or it would be a hell of a lot easier to justify our imminent invasion.]

If they don't put an end to THEIR referendum before it happens, then I suspect they will just have to bump Chavez off.Last I read,Chavez is gonna win hands down!

But... but... Iraq is "sovereign" now.

-------------------

Ahhh... gimme that ol' time rhyming history!

BAGHDAD - With its twin minarets and glinting gold dome, the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf has been a beacon for the Muslim faithful for more than a thousand years. But with fighting raging around the Iraqi shrine, one of the holiest sites in Shiite Islam is reprising a different historical role: rallying point against foreign forces.

In 1920, rebels intent on kicking out British troops occupying the region gathered at the mosque and readied for revolt. Among their leaders was Sayyid Mohammed Sadr the scion of a prominent Shiite family and a future prime minister.

Eighty-four years later, cleric Muqtada Sadr, one of Sadr's descendants, wants the U.S. military out. All eyes are once again trained on the shrine...

some whimpering about a "jam" in the background.

I'm not sure I was whimpering about a jam. I was really whimpering about volatility.

Sorry, I didn't mean anyone in particular ... I do my share of whimpering too ... about the statists, mainly.

Anything can happen in the market (prediction is meaningless)...

Geez, MH. You're taking a swipe at everyone today...

Still like my target of 1025 for 8/20. Looks like we may see one more day in the 1060-1080 trading range tomorrow.

100% short and not the least bit nervous about it...

Glad to chat with ya today Sherlock. :)
NONE of what I type, should be taken as financial advice.

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest that you've sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down, alone
Dragged down by the stone.

I agree with Stain tomorrow could be soft and up or sideways to up, sooo let your stops take you out and keep them just over resistance. This is far from over and I should also point out that there are so many external events weighing on the market that any one reaching a lance point could send us straight down the elevator shaft. Don't even think about going long unless you are fully hedged or straddled. Having said the above as always it is subject to change it's a long night! ;)

I am going to laugh my effing head off when Sadr and his crew detonate the explosives they've wired and blow their own dome.

Immediately, word will go out that American warplanes fired on the mosque.

We'll have a helluva time convincing the Iraqis immediately taking up arms and taking to the streest that we didn't do it.

Then, the Coalition of the Wilting will start playing, "Last One Out's a Rotten Egg." Helicopters will ingloriously depart the "Green Zone" in a rerun of the fall of Saigon.

Civil war and chaos will ensue, and Iraq will become a war-torn haven for the terrorists and virulent strains of Islamic theology that threaten citizens in the developed world.

Such are the consequences when egomaniacal rightous bastard idiots pursue thoughtless invasions without pondering the possible consequences.

We got about three more months of these petulent dumb assholes, and then another 3 months or so until the inaguration.... and then a freaking Life Time to try to repair the damage.

The more I think about the Google IPO, the more troubled I am by its implications for the market.

History shows that IPOs peak with the market indices, and disappear when they're weak. It's not only that the investment bonkers want to maximize the value of their 7% vig, while minimizing their risk of getting stuck with inventory. But also, the investment bonkers have relationships with many other issuers who would be offended by their clumsily wrecking the market. So the investment bonkers actually have numerous self-serving reasons to exercise restraint.

Not so with Google. First, for insiders who stand to make 1000-to-1 returns
on their shares, the loss of a few percentage points on the sale price is a rounding error. Moreover, they're saving the 7% vig, so who cares if the Naz drops 3% this week? They're still ahead of the game.

Finally, the Googlers can see just as plainly as you and I that the Naz is in a death dive. So there is an unseemly rush to gavel the auction, grab the loot, and get the hell out of Dodge before the tornado hits.

The upshot is that the novel, internet-friendly, "do no evil" Google auction may prove to be a very great evil indeed -- both an engine of destruction for share values, and a poison pill for a deathly ill stock market.

Google's frantic rush to sell could well push the market over a cliff tomorrow afternoon, opening the door for a "Black Monday" gap after the weekend. Seek shelter immediately.

Full court PR press to invade Iran...Venezuela...

Market meter will be late tonight. You know in two years it has only been wrong once and that was only for a day.

Tampa stores are out of batteries, water, bread. Highways north are getting crowded.

Plunger - if we don't invade Iraq, Iran and Venezuela there
will not be enough preparation H.

Some people may be pissed off because of what I
feel like saying, but here goes.

I went to the ATM today, which was busy. I drove a small
ford escort and I turned off the engine and did my business there.
Three other drivers in very large SUV and Trucks ran their engines
while they stood in line and did their withdrawls.

I was raised in a home where we were told to shut out lights,
save energy save money.

All the time I see the SUV drivers waste waste and waste and it pisses me
off cause when I was a kid we would get yelled out if we didn't
save energy and money. Makes me want to smack 'em. Kids are dying because of oil - how about a little concern for that. Cut the engine, dammit.

Am I wrong here?

ps - I can afford a Ferrari if I wanted to get from point A to point B and look like a rich asshole.

Full court PR press to invade Iran in progress as we speak.

Yes, they have been pounding the war drums pretty hard for a couple of weeks now.

W.

Condi.

Rummy.

Bolton in the State Department.

Unnamed "senior US officials."

But I ask myself: who are they going to get to do this "invading" part? The way things are going, they'll have to militarize and arm the meter maids or the 4-H Club.

Israel has declared quite openly that it's working on a plan to hit various Iranian nuclear facilities by sending F-15 tactical bombers through Turkish airspace.

USA contribution might consist of just giving them the nod to go ahead and do it. Or possibly infiltrate some special forces troops for various tasks.

I see horrendous complications from this.

What is the Iraqi on the street going to think of his/her gov't as it collaborates in the shelling of the cultural city of Najaf?

About the same as postwar Europeans thought of the collaborationist Vichy and Quisling governments.

They are regarded as having no legitimacy at all, and representing a period of national shame and disgrace.
