Dow Chemical To Incur $300M Restructuring Costs In '04-2-

The cost of energy and feedstocks - crude oil and natural gas derivatives used to produce chemical intermediates - rose nearly $100 million from a year ago and were about $400 million higher than in the fourth quarter of 2003. Reinhard, the CFO, predicted those costs will be substantially higher in the second quarter compared with a year ago, but up only slightly from the first quarter.

Dow's net increase rose six-fold to $469 million, or 50 cents a share, from $76 million, or 8 cents a share, in the first quarter of 2003 on a 15% rise in revenue.

Higher commodity prices have enabled farmers to be able to afford more agriculture chemicals to improve crop productivity. The company demand for fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides continue to rise, and Reinhard said he didn't believe there had been much pre-buying by farmers in the first quarter. Earnings before interest and taxes for the Agricultural Sciences business surged 80% in the first quarter.

DJ Blasts, Gunfire Heard In Fallujah; US Planes Circle City

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP)--Explosions and gunfire were heard in Fallujah Thursday in new skirmishes - despite an agreement to lift the U.S. Marine siege of the city.

Warplanes circled over the city. Blasts went off in the Golan neighborhood on the city's north side, a bastion of insurgents in the city, and sporadic bursts of gunfire could be heard.

The extent of the clashes wasn't yet known. The Golan has been the focus of fighting for the past three days, with U.S. warplanes pounding guerrillas who opened fire on U.S. Marines.

Hours earlier, Marines announced that a deal was reached for U.S. troops to end their siege of Fallujah, pulling back to allow a newly created all-Iraqi force to move in and impose security.
