There is nothing worse than hitting refresh and getting the sound for the 15th time whether you want it or not. Since their is no "mute" option in My Controls, I would agree with embedding a link within a post. Then we can listen to it to our hearts content whenever we wish to, without being forced to hear it when we do not.

I like the pull my finger idea. :) Where's ano?

I'm still catching up on the thread. was away on a job interview, then out with my aunt letting her drive my car for practice for her alzheimers (spelling)
disease test tomorrow. Have a home owners board meeting tonight. I missed the finger reference.
embed'd sound is part of the browswer, not settable by the user other than turn off wave files. the escape always works as it presses the invisible stop button.

on sounds, I love em. The 'frazier down' one I particularly love. The day I made everyone's computer 'pass gass' with the test of embed cracked me totally up. But I don't do them anymore. I do the "speakers on" link. This bulletin board has html turned off, so doing an anchor tag (link) to an image is not possible from what I've read on the board's source site.

what does happen if you are listening to a streaming source and the embed sound plays? do you get an error? or does it 'play' in the sound of the streaming source?

I may be teaching business education in a business college. We'll see :)

uh, ano- about the embedded html---

the finger us supposed to be a link to www.capitalstool.com, but the board adds a preamble making the link be
[URL=http://www.capitalstool.com]http://www.capitalstool.comURL]
** ok that is double weird...the displayed link is different than the actual link, it has extra periods etc. that are not in my post? a bug ?

with link as follows
(A HREF="www.capitalstool.com")(IMG SRC="http://www.capitalstool.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1039585316.gif" ALIGN="BOTTOM" ALT="PoopOn" BORDER="0")(/A)
(substituted ( ) for lessthan and greaterthan symbols

I didn't try to link a sound file since the image would not properly link just a URL. Maybe there is a switch to do a a MOD to the board software to add a new 'tag' for sound.

Like the Finger? (finger brings to mind Laugh In and the flying fickle finger of fate)

I would suggest the following improvements - add the "http://" prefix to the URL after the HREF tag and also "target=_blank" in order to open a new browser window when the picture is clicked:

Or using your notation of substituting "<" with "(" and ">" with ")", something like this:

(A HREF="http://www.capitalstool.com" target=_blank)(IMG SRC="http://www.capitalstool.com/forums/uploads/post-12-1039585316.gif" ALIGN="BOTTOM" ALT="PoopOn" BORDER="0")(/A)

This way the URL works properly.

this isn't quite correct. After all, an embedded image is "part of the browser" too - and the board's settings allow us to turn their displaying off. Since the messages are preprocessed by PHP before being displayed and according to one's personal settings, all that we need is the PHP preprocessor to filter out "EMBED" tags if the appropriate setting is set. Unfortunately, I doubt that this is something you or Doc can easily implement; it is something the board software developers are best suited for doing, since they know very well how exactly their software processes the messages, where and according to what settings. So, maybe Doc could contact them and ask them to implement the optional ability to filter EMBED tags?

Doc, regarding the rather negative outcome of the voting - I am afraid that you've fallen victim to your own cleverness. ;) Basically, the selection is between 4 answers that essentially say "yeah, keep the sounds" and 1 saying "no, don't". If you had are more fairly constructed range of possible answer, with real middle-ground choices (like "just include a clickable link to the sound" or "embed sounds only rarely"), I am sure that some more moderate choice would have carried out the vote.

Vesselin

doc the above format can be added to custom msg tags allowing user to fill in the url of the audio file, all else would be auto-generated by the board software :)

thanks again Bontchev!!

Ano, how did you manage to post an HTML fragment without having it interpreted by the board's software?! Did you use PRE or XMP or something like that?

I had to look up the hex codes in my old html 3.1 book

& # 60 = <
& # 62 = >

remove spaces between the &,#,60

my old standby & lt ; (no spaces) was interpreted by IE as markup

Neat!

It will probably work if you "escape" just the "&" sign. I mean something like

& amp;lt

(just no space)

Lots of linked sounds are best. Very special limited and short page sounds are fine.

Many tanks to all stoolies for their inputz. Doc has decided to reduce the use of embedded sounds to those most celebratory or mournful of occasions, where, in Doc's twisted judgement, such sounds would help to elighten, enliven, or shock, shock value being, of course, most highly prized by Doc. He will limit the embedment to a period of not less than five and not more than ten minutes, and will remove the sound, or convert it to a link, thereafter.

That should limit the annoyance factor which really pisses off the more serious minded 27.5% of you, and allow the 30% whose emotional maturity was, like Doc's, developmentally arrested at the age of 13 (or maybe nine, I'm not sure), to get their jollies every once in a while.

Fair enough?
