WASHINGTON : A closely watched index of future economic activity fell 0.3 percent in August, the third consecutive monthly decline, the Conference Board said on Thursday.

The research firm's index of leading economic indicators, forecasting activity in the coming months, dipped to 115.7, a reading weaker than expected on Wall Street.

"The leading indicators continue to soften," said Conference Board economist Ken Goldstein. "There is concern about weak consumption and the pace of wage and salary increases."

Both consumers and businesses are showing caution, the economist said.

"Consumers worry about their wages and salaries, which could limit spending," said Goldstein. "Businesses worry about their ability to raise prices and to cover rising costs."

The leading index, a harbinger of activity in the coming months, had dropped 0.3 percent in July and 0.1 percent in June.

On Wall Street, economist had expected on average a decline of 0.2 percent in August.

J US Snow: Despite Hurricanes, Sep Jobs Report Shows Growth

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--September's nonfarm payrolls figures were predictably influenced by the recent hurricanes, but still showed 13 consecutive months of job growth, U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said in Ohio on Friday.

Speaking to reporters after a University of Toledo-sponsored meeting with small business leaders from northwest Ohio, Snow said bad weather, especially the hurricanes in Florida, hampered jobs growth. He noted that Ohio is one of only three states where unemployment has not decreased.

Earlier Friday, the Labor Department reported that nonfarm business payrolls grew by a net 96,000 in September, while the unemployment rate held steady at 5.4%

........................................

The Treasury Secretary also said he believes the government will hit the $7.384 trillion debt limit in mid-October. He said Treasury will discuss the issue with members of Congress, by mail and telephone if Congress has recessed.

Spiro T. Agnew. Seems like yesterday.

His resignation was on Oct. 10, 1973 -- 31 years ago as of Sunday.

Thugs like Cheney make Agnew seem a rather harmless rogue by comparison ...

"Nattering nabobs of negativism" far exceeds the linguistic capacity of Cheney and Chimpster's combined ratiocinative powers ...
