Britain can you spare a bubble?

British Boom Driven by Personal Debt

By ALAN COWELL

Published: April 28, 2004

LONDON, April 27 - In recent weeks, two snapshot events framed the evolving saga of Britain's booming economy, one of the fastest-growing in the industrialized world.

First, in early March, the widow of Stephen Lewis, a 37-year-old engineering worker earning about $39,000 a year, revealed that he had taken his own life after running up $117,000 in debt on 19 separate credit cards. The debt left him facing monthly interest payments in excess of his pretax earnings - a parable of Britain's growing dependence on credit.

... Rather, it is a story that illustrates why Britain's economy keeps on growing, and the perils that set it apart from the economies of continental Europe. While major European countries like France and Germany are stalled, forecasts of the British economy say it will grow 3 to 3.5 percent this year, much of it driven by consumer spending as manufacturing, once the cornerstone, struggles.

At one end of the scale, ever higher house prices - illustrated in Mr. Mittal's purchase of a huge spread in Kensington - have sent the average value of a home in Britain soaring by 50 percent since early 2002, to $331,000, the highest figure on record and 5.3 times the average income of homeowners.

Despite frequent forecasts of a slowdown, moreover, the average increase is running at up to 18 percent a year, according to Halifax, the mortgage lender, far outstripping consumer price inflation of 1.1 percent. Even the International Monetary Fund sounded a warning recently that the main risk to Britain's economic outlook "is the possibility of an abrupt correction in the housing market.''

BOJ Holds the Line

Bank of Japan expects deflation to ease further

By Barney Jopson in Tokyo

Published: April 28 2004 10:03 | Last Updated: April 28 2004 10:03

The Bank of Japan's policy board expects the deflation dogging Japan's economy to ease further this year, with one of its members forecasting a return to annual inflation of 0.5 per cent.

A majority of the policy board's nine members expect the consumer price index to fall by 0.2 to 0.1 per cent in the current fiscal year, following a 0.2 per cent drop in the 12 months to March, according to a closely-watched BoJ economic report released on Wednesday.

The forecasts highlight how the fight against deflation continues in slow motion even as Japan enjoys relatively rapid economic growth following years of stagnation.

They also indicate the BoJ's ultra-loose zero interest rate policy will stay in place for at least another year - the central bank has said it will not tighten monetary conditions until a majority of board members expect prices to be steady or rise in the year ahead.

I hate to be picky, but have we experienced some sort of bizzare time warp that has caused Wednesday to go missing? B)

Probably something to do with homeland security. Reduce the number of days in a week and reduce the risk.

Comcast withdrew its bid for DIS, and that thing is more than likely to collapse. They may try to defend it today, but my guess is it goes straight down.

RCL is fugly...I gamed it yesterday, and while it may bounce again, it sure looks like this time, it may pause at 40, but it's destined for 30 at some point.

The corruption in this country's government has gone beyond amusing. Way beyond. Justice Scalia, after joining Cheney on a hunting trip in Texas, seems ready to block all public access to the records of Cheney's secret energy meetings. Now what would be so scandalous as to regard the holdings of these secrets as the highest priority? I think the answer is obvious. Dickey and the oil moguls are keenly aware of the ramifications of Hubberts peak and the only viable solution in their minds was total control of the Middle East with Iraq being the launching point of the plan and a place to plant their shiny black boots which is why the supposed "reconstruction" of Iraq seems mostly focused on the construction of massive bases all over the desert. This is no joke, this is what is happening right now.

Electing Kerry will not change the plan one iota. So it matters little to the PTB whether they have a Kerry puppet or a Bush puppet choking on pretzels. The PTB may well prefer to "cleanse" the administration by dumping Shrubka and his merry gang of neocons in order to give the appearance of a fresh start, while in reality nothing changes. They probably have their moistened finger in the air, seeking guidance on the wind direction of the voters and are prepared to give a little push in either direction. If they decide to retain the Shrubmeister, Kerry may well be exposed as a baby raper, or some other insidious charge at an appropriate moment, to tip the vote or they may just decide to go with an outright Diebold victory. It really doesn't matter, in the end all American citizens and indeed all humans on the planet will suffer, all except the elitists who think they are in control.

On another note of our "progress", it appears as five states are now prepared to inject the "homeless" with mandatory RFID tags so their location can be monitored and they can be "helped". Since when is it a crime, under our Constitution, to be homeless or for that matter be "nameless"? It isn't. What possible justification is there for this action? None. Once this program starts it can't be stopped. Quickly other classes of citizens will be targeted for similar "help". Eventually it will be illegal not to have an RFID tag. Want a license to drive? Scan your hand so we can ID you. No RFID? No license. No RFID? No groceries.

Perhaps if Greenspan can pull off the complete and total destruction of the global monetary system, it can all be stopped. Perhaps that is what he has had in mind all along. I can't reject that possiblity given his earlier leanings. He may be the only friend we have in a position that can achieve results.

Yes I know just the early morning ravings of a lunatic.

Yobob1- have long appreciated your posts. Do you have a source for above?

Just returned from Tokyo last week: Japan, who has had some respect for homeless citizens up to now (tolerating Tent cities and semi-permament self-built housing in the parks) has just, coincidentally also adopted new policies to "control" homeless population. Homeless are generally middle-aged or older men who were the builders/laborers who found work during the booming 80s economy, no longer needed. As per custom of honor, kids appear to still take in their their mamas...

Thanx
