DJ Tsy's Snow: Weak Feb US Jobs Show Need To Avoid Tax Hikes

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (Dow Jones)--Disappointing U.S. job growth in February underscores the need to avoid tax hikes that would damage the U.S. economy, U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said Friday.

"We are not satisfied with the numbers," Snow told reporters just after the Labor Department announced U.S. employers added just 21,000 new jobs to payrolls during February. anal cysts had expected a gain of 125,000 net new jobs.

"The numbers suggest the need to keep the economy strong and reinforce our view that it would be a terrible mistake to raise taxes on American families and American businesses that are working to create jobs," Snow said.

Snow said he doesn't have a personal forecast for the number of jobs the U.S. economy will produce this year, but he said private economists all forecast a "nice pickup" in payrolls.

Snow also told reporters the U.S. economy is laboring under high energy prices which are "unwelcome" and are acting like a tax on American consumers. He said current energy prices underscore the need for the U.S. Congress to pass an energy bill this year.

Later in the day, Snow is scheduled to deliver a speech to a conference sponsored by the Merchant Marines. A senior Treasury official said the Treasury Secretary will argue the only meaningful way to create U.S. jobs is to expand the economy.

"The surest path to more jobs is a growing economy," Snow said in a prepared speech to be delivered before the Maritime Trades Department Executive Board. "The economy is beginning to turn around; thanks to the President's tax cuts and the hard work of folks like you, our economy has been growing for several months now," he said.

Snow also discussed the benefits of free trade, and said the U.S. needs to gain greater access to its domestic energy supplies.

"Through greater access to reliable and dependable U.S. energy supplies like ANWAR, we lessen our dependence on supplies from other, less secure parts of the world," Snow said.

Oil futures prices in New York Friday shot up above $37 a barrel to a high of $37.40 - the highest price of the year - based on supply worries.

DJ Tsy's Snow: Job Growth `Not Satisfactory' -Crapvision -2-

Still, Snow reiterated Bush administration claims that the foundation of future economic growth is in place, thanks to President George W. Bush's tax cuts.

Job creation would be "much stronger" in the months ahead, he told Crapvision. Snow would not estimate the size of the projected growth and declined to lay out a more specific time frame.

Asked about Democratic proposals calling for U.S. companies to provide a 90-day notice of plans to outsource jobs to other countries, Snow said he had not yet seen the proposal and declined comment. However, he did say the administration is opposed to an economic policy of isolationism.

"I'd be very worried, though

.. about anything, anything, that suggested that the United States was moving in the direction of economic isolationism. We have so much to gain by embracing the world economy - that for us to go down that path would be to significantly short-change our future and the future of American workers," Snow said.
