article on the apparently ultra-powerful Bilderberg group meeting now, May 14-17.

Mentions the conspiracy theories that this group runs the world for its benefit and to the detriment of everyone else. But the author is agnostic about these theories.

Who knows what they do if they keep it a secret? But they could just be an organization that invites accomplished people to join, and they do join. And then they may keep the meetings secret so that people can discuss things freely, without first weighing every word they say-- in order to guess how it will sound if it ends up being quoted out of context in the media.

I think Adam Smith stated a general principle that we can rely on here:

People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.

California Hopelessly Bankrupt, Hundreds of Thousands Fleeing the State to Avoid Out of Control Taxes and Search for Jobs

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday called for laying off thousands of state employees and slashing billions from education to deal with California's latest budget deficit. He called the cuts painful but said he was left with no other choice as the nation's most populous state sinks further into the fiscal abyss.

The state's unemployment rate has jumped beyond 11 percent, the construction industry is in a tailspin and the retail landscape is dotted with empty storefronts.

To raise revenue, Schwarzenegger proposed increasing some park fees, imposing a property surcharge for emergency protection and selling a portion of a state insurance program. He also would authorize an expansion of oil drilling off the Santa Barbara coast, generating $1.8 billion in royalties over 14 years.

California is having to readjust its 2009-10 spending plan even though Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers passed a two-year budget in February to deal with what was then a $42 billion shortfall. They agreed to $15 billion in cuts, $12.8 billion in temporary tax increases and $11.4 billion in borrowing, but it has not been enough.

yeah, i've got a severe case of badnewsfatigue. and my wife has virtually banned any depressing economic talk, and that seems like a healthy tact. after all, i've kept abreast of enough nasty news to protect and even grow our assets during these hellacious times; what else can i do? writing my congresscritter and senators has been fruitless.

re: secret societies--the illuminati, if they exist, have proven to be Ftards. they don't know, and neither do we.

Thank god for Shorty is all I can say.

Doc I wish you would give more credence to the kind of options racketeering that

seems to happen every OE week. I beleive it dilutes technical and cycle analysis during that time period each month. The option writers have a vested interest in manipulating price to maximum pain levels and I beleive they have the money and the Houses behind them to do it. I see this time and time again almost each month, sorry. Just a personal opinion but why people don't formally trade it as a trend is beyond me, at the very least hedge positions for the week.

best,buddha
