aussiebear
Hmmm well the intraday action doesn't look too bullish. All Ords closed -0.2% with Property Trusts, -2.2% (heheh) dragging the market down. There was only two green sectors, Materials +0.9% and Healthcare +0.3%. The miners looked pretty good: BHP +1.1% and RIO +0.5% and in the golds, Newcrest and Newmont did very well, +3% and 2.8%. Not a great day for the oils: Woodside +0.6% and Santos +0.3%. Asia somewhat varied: Nikkei -0.8% and Hang Seng +0.9%. Over to UK/Europe: http://quote.yahoo.com/m2?u
aussiebear
Sri Lanka Maintains Key Rate at Highest Level in Asia March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka's central bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at the highest level in Asia, judging that five increases in borrowing costs since June may be enough to tame inflation. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka left its repurchase rate at 10.5 percent, the Colombo-based bank said in a statement today. Consumer prices in the capital Colombo rose 19.2 percent in February from a year earlier, after increasing 20.5 percent in January. Sri Lanka's annual average inflation rate accelerated to 15.8 percent in February, compared with 14.8 percent in January. -------------------- India's Edible Oil Imports Decline 44% in February March 16 (Bloomberg) -- India, the world's second-biggest importer of vegetable oil, imported 44 percent less edible oils in February as producers processed more oilseeds locally. Imports declined to 150,927 metric tons in February from 269,050 tons a year earlier, the Solvent Extractors' Association said on its Web site. The drop in imports may weigh on prices of palm oil produced by Malaysia and Indonesia, and on soybean oil from Argentina and Brazil. Malaysian palm oil futures, which gained 26 percent in the past six months, fell today, while soyoil also declined after rising 22 percent in six months. aussiebear
Australian Inflation Likely to Be Too High, Edey Says March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Australia's core inflation rate is ``more likely to be too high than too low'' in the next two years, Reserve Bank of Australia Assistant Governor Malcolm Edey said, signaling that interest rates may need to rise. The outlook for underlying inflation ``is still higher than ideal,'' Edey told an Australia-Japan Economic Outlook conference in Sydney. ``It implies that inflation is more likely to be too high than too low in the period we can foresee.'' A pickup in wages and economic growth at the end of 2006 may stoke inflation this year and prompt the Reserve Bank to add to its three interest-rate increases last year. Edey's comments today underscore bank Governor Glenn Stevens' statement last month that borrowing costs are more likely to rise than fall in 2007.
