Southfield votes to lay off 1,300 workers

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) -- Unless voters approve a summer millage vote, the Southfield School Board will lay off more than 1,300 employees.

The school board voted Tuesday to make the lay offs -- which include 705 teachers.

The school board had to make vote because contracts require districts to give about 60 days notice to its union-represented personnel.

DJ Taser CEO Says Stun Weapons Are Not Dangerous >TASR

.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Taser International Inc. (TASR) Chief Executive Rick Smith told Crapvision his taser weapons are not dangerous.

In an interview Wednesday, Smith said he's been hit with the taser six times.

On Tuesday, the company responded to a CBS news report about its Taser stun weapon, saying medical examiners have not listed the weapon as the cause of death where autopsy reports were available.

Also Tuesday, the company announced a 2-for-1 stock split payable on or about April 29 to shareholders of record April 15.

CBS reported on Monday 40 people had died while in police custody after a Taser weapon was used to restrain them.

Smith said in a majority of the cases, the death is caused by drug overdoses. Considering the statistics for amount of drug users, he said he was surprised there were so few incidents. There are 50,000 Taser users in the field.

Taser's law enforcement customers are aware of the issue, Smith said, adding he was concerned the public would be misled by a connection with Taser and the deaths.

Smith said the stock split was filed last week, and the timing of its announcement was coincidental to the CBS report.

Investors see a lot of potential in the non-leathal small arms market, he said.

"We're positioned to revolutionze the small-arms industry with a nonlethal option," he said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. import prices rose by much more than expected in March as the cost of imported fuel jumped, while home refinancings were dampened by higher mortgage rates, new data showed on Wednesday.

The price of goods imported into the United States was up 0.9 percent, the sixth consecutive monthly rise after a 0.4 percent gain in February, the Labor Department said.

March's rise was nearly double Wall Street forecasts for a 0.5 percent advance.

The cost of petroleum products climbed 6.1 percent after a revised 0.1 percent gain the previous month. Non-petroleum imports increased 0.2 percent.

Export prices were up 0.9 percent, the largest gain since April 1995's 1.0 percent rise, Labor said.

Imported food costs advanced 0.8 percent after pushing up a revised 1.3 percent in February.

Commodity prices have been powered higher in recent months. The Reuters/CRB Index of 17 commodity futures, a widely watched benchmark for raw material prices, sits near a 23-year high reached two weeks ago.
