DrStool
I suspect that there are network outages on the web given how few people, including no members, are on board at the moment.

howard in nyc
Howard- Thanks for your story! When I lived in Manhattan I was at 90th and First. It was a fringe neighborhood then. New building at the time. The bodega at the corner wasn't selling groceries. Or not much groceries. i heard that water lapped up to the intersection of 96th and First at high tide monday night. but that was it; metropolitan hospital one block north had no flooding afaik. and, yeah, now days you have to go further uptown to get your greens from the bodega. bundys_dodge
Reporting from Long Island... lost power Monday evening and just got it back. Lots of trees down. Fortunately no flooding around where I live. It is scary to see how order breaks down when the traffic signal lights are not functional. This is the case even with very very light traffic. It does not matter how short or long the drive is, all it takes is some confusion about who has the right of way in one non-functional signal. If you don't have to be on the road, stay home. And never trust the cell phones in emergencies, all those "5 bar" signal strength you normally are brought to you buy a neighborhood booster transmitters. When the power goes they go down too. At one point I was getting "Roaming" on my phone as it was attempting to connect to some remote transmission tower. Also get those inverters that can be run off the car battery (with the car running, in a ventilated location). You can get a decent one for around $75-$100. Mine has the output capacity of 750W. Up to 120W you can run it from the cigarette lighter socket - charge cell phones, video games etc., . More than that you have to connect to the battery terminal. Some refrigerators can run on 750W, but check the specs carefully for voltage and amperage. Small rice cookers can run on 400W and can be used to heat water, milk, steam food etc. Obviously you can not run the car 24 hours on idle, but inverters appear to be a good backup. If you don't own or have access to a portable generator this can be a decent fall back option.

DrStool
Doc was right about Sandy. I hope TJ is suffering nothing more than an power outage. I was just relaying reports from NHC and Accuweather, whom I have found to be reliable forecasters in the past. Last year, they accurately foretold that Irene was weakening and that inland flooding would be greater threat. So when their warnings kept getting more shrill and they warned that storm would strengthen with higher winds and surge before landfall, I took that seriously and relayed that.
