chibear
Thanks, Mark, Inspiring letter. I looked at the financials' charts and they don't seem so bad yet, at least JPM and Citibank. Well, OK. If GE is a financial that looks ominous. I agree with Budha about the lull before the Perfect Storm. But, just in case it all turns out to be real, it's good to see real men and women in charge, for a change. All this activity serves to divert media attention away from the anti- American, commie organized, sixties leftovers who pretend to be against the war, but are really just against this great country, no matter what. No demonstrations in the duct tape aisle at Home Depot. Oh, and don't forget the plastic wrap. Loved the Denny Hastert idea about putting bright orange warning labels on French wines treated with cow blood. Americans have been taking crap from the French for years and rolling over. No more. Could we have sold down today over fears of trade wars? I don't think it was Bin Laden on the tape. But it serves a political purpose at this time to agree that it is. I personally think the Swiss experts are right that the previous tape was a fake. Doesn't mean that the other Al Qaeda nuts are any less dangerous. Guest
Does anyone know of gold dealers in the U.S. who ship overseas? As you know by now I live in the U.K. and could buy bars and coins here, but the premium is higher as it seems competition is not as fierce here as over there. I've called Tulving and GoldDealers.com but none of them deal internationally. Kitco ships overseas, but their premium over the spot price is higher than most others On a completely random note, I think the display of tanks and military personnel at Heathrow as well as advice to stock up on three days worth of food and drinking water is a final effort to improve on opinion polls in favor of attacking Iraq before the weekend. Once enough people have been scared into thinking that Iraq and bin Laden are in partnership and bent on attacking America and her allies Bush and Blair will have the go-ahead to attack Iraq. Don't forget that we armed Saddam Hussein as he fought Iran and we armed bin Laden as the Soviets were driven out of Afghanistan. Now Saddam Hussein has served his purpose and will be disposed of. I'm not so sure, however, that bin Laden has outlived his usefulness. Chilling messages from him are the most effective way to rally support in democracies like the U.S. and the U.K. How do we know that the tape was not fabricated? They deal with international buyers per their website, so you may want to give them a call. I have dealt with them in the past and found them to be competitive and a good organization to do business with. USA Gold
Sphinxter
I have lurked and I have squatted, but now it's time to wade on in. This community is great. I am humbled and awed by your dilligence and market knowledge. At this stage, given my utter and profound lack of market knowledge, all I figure my role to be in the vein of Flubber from animal house. "Hey Sphinxster, come on over to this three week old thread in the political section, there's a couple of guys I'd like you should meet. Have a seat on this tasty thread about Trent Lott" My story: 6 months ago I was a card carrying, ready to be shorn, fully somnulent member of the sheeple. Hell, I was half a flock myself. Disciple first class. "Buy and Hold!" I used to scream. "Get the terrorists!". Then I looked into the odd lack of jet-fighter response on 9/11 and remembered the odd bit about listening to kids read about goats for 25 minutes while huge, kerosene laden bombs were streaking all over the presumably heavily travelled and protected north eastern flight corridors. Then I sumbled onto a few sites like morerubbish.com and it was all over. Suffice it to say, that I seem to have swallowed one mfking huuge red-pill and I know I can never go back. Never. [note: in retrospect, that movie is really the bomb - most accurate movie of the decade]. Following a bit of independent reading and thinking about markets I have completely removed all my assets from the casino, except a modest quantity of recently purchased gold shares, converted all of my monopoly money into hard assets and cash, put my house on the market, pulled my kids from school in favor of home schooling, and am looking to move to a nice farm a bit further north with decent tillable acreage [hey, over the next 20 eyars who here thinks we keep up with this silly-ass oil burning economy? We'll all be telling fond stories to our grandkids "when I was young this 4 lane strip of tar was filled with cars! Idling! No really, come back!"]. Here's my entire investing strategy - the dollar is going to suck some serious tailpipe over the next decade and I plan to cheer the whole way. Stocks will die on some ugly 4 Sigma event (I don't think "10" is necessary, I think the hotshots on Maulstreet have constructed some very nice independent models of risk but have failed to properly account for ideosyncratic risk let alone coupled systemic risk) Not to run on, but here's my salvo against the Matrix for today: Stan O?Neal CEO Merrill Lynch 4 World Financial Center New York, NY 10080 Mr. O?Neal: I have been a faithful client of ML for over a decade and have been a preferred client the entire time. With the recent disgraceful behavior of Mr. O?Reilly of FOX and his despicable treatment of Mr. Glickman who lost his father in 9/11, I have reached my personal limit. I stood firm through your anal cyst fiascos, and did not waiver when I lost money on bad advice. I personally brought other family accounts to ML, all preferred clients. However, the fact that ML chooses to support such a despicable show as the O?Reilly factor indicates that ML lacks the moral compass I seek in my brokerage firm. Sadly, on this basis I am terminating my 10+ relationship with ML. I will miss my broker, he?s a friend of the family. However, in my world, ethics and responsibility are the most important qualities but I can no longer certify that ML possesses these traits. FOX is actively promoting the Iraq war and anyone who cannot foresee the likely impact of an oil shock on our weak economy has an agenda that I simply do not share. When this narrow vision eclipses common decency to the point that a 9/11 victim?s son is verbally attacked for holding an different point of view, well, now we?ve crossed a line I cannot condone. I urge you to reconsider your support for FOX and its viewpoints. Until then, I will be a Fleet client. Good luck in the new year. For all of our sakes, let?s hope it?s better than last year. Sincerely, XXXXXXX Unfortunately, I am off on business for a few days [to London - Yikes! I really, really, am nervous about going. Please, please don't let the shooting start 'till I get home] so I won't be able to read this most excellent board for a few days. I look forward to reading and stumbling about when I get back. Soon I even hope to be allowed off the sofa to join the real party. Time to go plan tomorrows salvo. Cheers

DrStool
Going from the Mohel Lynch mob (Oy do we got tips for you) to Fleet Enema gang is like going from the frying pan into the fire. This is simply exchanging a bunch of smart crooks for a bunch of dumbass ones. Get a good cheap on-line broker and stop paying those ridiculous commissions and fees for the privilege of being on the receiving end for a crooked distributor of worthless securities.
