U.S. stocks trade higher but oil price fears cap gains

Tuesday August 17, 11:22 am ET

By Mark Cotton

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - U.S. stocks gained ground but were off their best levels Tuesday as positive inflation and housing data failed to dispel unease over the current strength of oil prices, with crude continuing to trade above $46 per barrel.

. . .

An unexpected dip in headline retail inflation for July eased investor fears that rising inflation could further undermine slowing U.S. economic growth.

Consumer prices fell 0.1 percent in July, the first decline since November 2003. Excluding food and energy costs, the core CPI rose 0.1 percent, below economist expectations of a 0.2 percent rise.

The retail inflation data for July reinforces the "Fed view that much of the spring rise in inflation was "transitory," according to Ian Sheperdson, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics.

"But good CPI numbers alone will not stop rates rising slowly," Sheperdson warned.

Sheperdson said August CPI data is not likely to be as rosy due to the recent jump in oil prices.

Partial claims. In certain cases, the FHA "advances" -- that is, pays -- the arrears owed by a delinquent borrower to bring the loan account current. In exchange, the borrowers sign a promissory note secured by the property to repay FHA when they sell the house or pay off the mortgage.

(Since you seem unable to afford this house we have decided to lend you more money???!!! WTF)

AROUND THE OFFICE AT FHA, THIS IS KNOWN AS THE ARGENTINE STRATEGY

How ironic to think that Argentina's name was derived from the Latin root for "silver." If only they had had a silver-backed currency......

The housing bubble will be the biggest bubble of all.

Just heard this on public radio:

Administration top priority for economy is not inflation, not jobs - it is terrorism.

Let inflation rip.

Do you think the markets will like this?

What the administration is saying is:

"Just focus on your fear of terror. Whether you're working two jobs to make ends meet or looking for work, you don't have time to worry about a collapsing dollar, ballooning oil prices or the prospect of a major bursting of the housing bubble. Just keep looking for suspicious Arabs in your neighborhoods and we'll handle everything else."
