The Treasury is trying to entice more foreign central bank buying with TIPS:

Central banks are expected to account for a significant bid in Tuesday?s auction of Treasury inflation-protected securities (Tips) for the first time as the US Treasury pushes ahead with plans to diversify its investor base.

On Tuesday, $12bn in five-year notes will be sold - the first auction at this maturity since 1997. Earlier this year, the Treasury sold $11bn in 20-year bonds for the first time and total Tips issuance will more than double this year compared with 2003.

The sale is expected to attract strong demand as data have shown inflation creeping higher and the rising oil price has dominated market concerns.

Recent Federal Reserve data have shown the Street is net short of Tips - a sign the bonds are in demand from investors.

Bond traders expect new interest from central banks, which have a growing interest in liquid, shorter-dated securities.

?Typically, central banks don?t go beyond five-year paper,? said Richard Gilhooly, fixed-income strategist at BNP Paribas, who added that the high prices on current shorter-dated paper might also encourage their interest. ?They don?t like buying above par, so could view this as a good opportunity to get in,? he added.

Preparations continue for the landmark Kerry v. Bush lawsuit:

ORLANDO, Florida -- A U.S. district judge ruled Monday that Florida election officials have no legal obligation to provide voter-verifiable paper trails for electronic voting machines, but it would be better if they did.

In tossing out a suit brought by Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Florida), Judge James Cohn ruled that the touch-screen voting machines do not hinder the ability of election officials to determine the choice of voters in any race.

No paper trail, no prob

This place is gonna plunge in chaos next Wednesday ... and so are the markets. :o

Here's a wonderful hatchet job on commodities from an ink-stained-wretch financial 'journalist' (Matthew Lynn) at Bloomberg:

Oct. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Of all the markets you could have invested in during the past 18 months, you would have done best in commodities.

Oil has hogged most of the attention, yet the price of just about every raw material has been soaring.

And now? There are signs the commodities bubble may be popping. Few booms last forever, and this one is no exception.

The Dangerous Bubble

Ha ha ha. That's rich.

Commodities have been rising for a mere 18 months, having yet to even recover their prices of 24 years ago -- and that's a "Bubble."

But houses and stocks sell for TEN TIMES their 1980 prices ... and few call that a Bubble.

The media has been skeptical of the crude oil and commodity rallies all the way up. As long as they keep throwing brickbats from the sidelines, you can keep buying.

Only at the Top will the frayed-collar, plastic pocket-protector financial 'journalists' tell you, "Gold and Oil are 'must own' assets."

Now as for hatchet jobs, get a load of this sentence from the article:

Two, the global economy is expanding slower.

If young Matt hadn't fallen asleep in eighth grade after sniffing glue, his grammar teacher might have taught him to write, "The global economy is expanding more slowly."

But hey -- if you're financially illiterate, you may as well go whole hog and be grammatically illiterate as well, eh Matt? :P
