Ids World Markets Tues 30th March 04

Recommended Posts

Ain't going nowhere so far. All Ords up a feeble 0.1%, volume low, nothing much happening at all. Banks down half a percent, Newscorp and Telstra doing a bounce, yawn.

Golds down 1-2%, looking like just a pullback at this stage. Oils also down, -0.7%.

Nikkers jumped at open but did the bellyflop, +0.1%, Singers +0.5% and Sth Korea +0.3%. Looks like US action being perceived as a short covering rally...

Building approvals rise 3.2%: ABS

Building approvals jumped in February, the first rise after four months of falls, new figures showed.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said building approvals rose 3.2 per cent, confounding market expectations of another fall in the wake of back-to-back interest rate rises last year.

The total was inflated by a 17.1 per cent surge in approvals to build apartments and townhouses, with approvals for stand-alone houses falling for the fifth month in a row.

A scrappy sort of day with the index all over the place and volume lumpy. All Ords closed +7.9 (+0.2%) which puts us neither here nor there in the scheme of things, just taking up space on the chart. One of the big banks (CBA) went north after news but the other 3 languished. BHP +1.3% on good volume but has been going sideways for 3 months.

Golds sold off: Lihir -1.7%, Newcrest -2.4% and Newmont -0.5%. Oils down slightly on low volume.

Honkers way up +2%, Nikkers -0.2%, Singers +0.6%.
