AMD meets reduced forecast for third quarter

Thu Oct 7, 2004 04:20 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD.N: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a third-quarter profit from a loss a year-earlier on Thursday, but sales fell from the second quarter in line with the chip maker's recently reduced outlook.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company, the chief rival to Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) in the market for personal computer microprocessors, earned $44 million, or 12 cents a share, in the quarter ended Sept. 26, from a year earlier loss of $31 million, or 9 cents a share.

........In Norway, an oil-rig strike was set to escalate Friday night, cutting total output by about 55,000 barrels of oil a day, the Norwegian Shipowners Association told Dow Jones Newswires Thursday.

? In the U.S., the Minerals Management Service reported Thursday that 475,176 barrels of oil a day and 1.775 billion cubic feet of gas a day remained offline in the wake of Hurricane Ivan.

? Cumulative losses since the storm have reached 16.56 million barrels of oil and 72.28 billion cubic feet of gas, said MMS, a unit of the U.S. Department of Energy.

? Royal Dutch/Shell has said its Shell Oil unit plans to keep some oil and natural gas production in the Gulf off line into the first quarter of 2005.

? Against the global backdrop of nearly neck-and-neck oil supply and demand and tight U.S. petroleum inventories, even marginal supply problems can be worrisome.

? Ivan, which hit the Gulf Coast twice in two weeks, took a heavy toll on domestic stocks, which last week continued to see crude and products below their five-year averages.

? The storm also disrupted Gulf imports and punched holes in the region's network of oil and natural gas pipelines, causing leaks at numerous points for thousands of miles.
