Looks like the government in Taiwan is trying to take advantage of the Asian Exotic express........

July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's biggest supplier of made-to-order semiconductors, sold $822 million of American depositary receipts, a person familiar with the transaction said.

Taiwan Semiconductor, which hired Goldman Sucks Group Inc. and Mohel Lynch & Co. for the sale, sold about 79 million shares at $10.40 each, a 0.7 percent discount to yesterday's closing price of $10.47.

Some 97.8 percent of the shares on offer are being sold by the development fund of the Taiwan government's cabinet, the company said earlier this month. The government needs the money to help close a NT$237.4 billion ($6.9 billion) budget deficit.Bloomberg

The bankers' group said applications dropped 17.7 percent from the previous week. Refinance applications dropped 21.3 percent and purchase applications fell 5.5 percent. The average rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 5.37 percent from 5.23 percent the previous week.

Good morning and Good Stool to all. Your Golden Stool is ready for download. Is this a buying opportunity? Click Here to find out.

The posts above serve to illustrate some key points I have been hammering at. First, high prices create supply, both in new issues and option exercises. Second, the refi boom, and thus the credit bubble, is in the process of going kaput. Finally, it is better to have two heads, than one.

Buy out rumors hitting the Yahoo Boards for both ASYT and BRKS. ASYT already up a buck on Island on fair volume.

Let's see, it's buy the news and sell the rumor, right? :o

Edit: Make that up a buck and a half

Many tanks again for those prayers you sent for my Dad! Both he and Mom were feeling much better yesterday, and we are hopeful that they will be well enough to make the trip up here to spend some time with ushere at the lake.

By the way, I'm curious as to how many stoolies might be within walking distance of Montreal. Perhaps we could have a Canadian and Uppa US ASS meeting this summer.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has launched a formal probe of Tenet Healthcare (THC: news, chart, profile). The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company said it was subpoenaed by the SEC Tuesday afternoon. The SEC seeks documents relating to Medicare payments and other financial disclosures dating back to May, 31 1997. Tenet said it is cooperating with the investigation. In a separate development, Tenet shareholders are questioning the company's search for a new chief executive. Former CEO Jeffrey Barbakow was removed in May. Shares of Tenet fell 4.1 percent to $11.65 in pre-market open trades.
