Even the EXPAT jobs in China have dried up.

Unless you speak Mandarin and have

select skills FORGETABOUTIT.

Apparently there is a growing community known as

HALFPATS. Americans with language skills, who

don't get the conventional corporate posting, but

just front up in China looking for opportunity.

Cnnfn this morning with Jack Berugian: Jack called bears "the lunatic fringe". 15 minutes after his oozing bullish swag, we're looking at 900 again.

rog: Got some of DELL yesterday. Your rumor comments tilted my decision. I normally don't do that, but we just seemed to be topping.

I hope for a pause rather than a bounce this morning, but there are so many biggies on the wrong side they may gang up on us. Everyone was looking to buy stocks after a good employment number. Japanese money in the market the last few days (Chicago floor opinion) using two of the gang plus five or so smaller guys to cover the trail.

Rog,

Have you heard any recent rumours about CSFB and who might be in pole position to acquire?

I think it is going in pieces. Pershing (former clearing operations from DLJ) was sold earlier in the week to Bank of New York for $2B. There are no big buyers that I know of willing to venture into an investement bank. That alone tells you that the guys on the front line don't think we have hit bottom.

On this day in ?

* 1863, London's Metropolitan, the world's first underground passenger

railway, opened to the public..

* 1878, a constitutional amendment that would give women the right to

vote was introduced into the U.S. Senate. It wasn't until 42 years later

that the amendment was signed into law.

* 1920, the League of Nations was established as the Treaty of

Versailles went into effect..

* 1928, the Soviet Union ordered the exile of Leon Trotsky

* 1946, the first General Assembly of the United Nations convened in

London.

* 2000, America Online announced it had agreed to buy Time Warner for

$165 billion, in what would be the biggest merger in history.

Agree it is going to pieces but I think the willingness of a buyer would depend on the price.

With the sale of DLJ Direct and now Pershing it seems to me Credit Suisse may be clearing the decks. FWIW I hear big Americans are looking very carefully at CSFB right now. I'd like to get short on whoever it is if true. . .
