Guest
My father, quietly great By Richard Cohen NEWTON, Mass. - Harry L. Cohen died early Sunday here after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Pearl (Pat) Rosenberg Cohen, two children, two grandchildren and the sweet memories of anyone who knew him. He was 94 years old, and my father. Newspaper obituaries generally are reserved for people of some achievement or notoriety. My father doesn't fit that bill. He was a mere high school graduate who worked almost all his life for one firm. He invented nothing, discovered nothing, wrote nothing and was elected to no office. He was the most ordinary of men - but, God, I have known few like him, and neither have you . . .
DrStool
I know exactly what he means. My father, weakened by cancer, finally stopped going to work just a few months ago at the age of 88. He has been married and completely devoted to the same woman for over 60 years. He has never pursued greatness, but he has always taken care of the day to day things that matter, perfectly. He does what he loves to do, without any thought about what others think of that. He has never done, or even said, a dishonest thing in his life. He wouldn't even know how.

DrStool
Latest forecast track makes Isabel less of a threat to insurers, and thus the financial markets, if it holds, with reduced winds, passing over Richmond, and west of DC. Still, flooding could be major problem in NC, VA, MD, PA. However, a slight shift to the right could keep the storm over open water up through the Chesapeake, resulting in a direct hit on DC with hurricane force winds and heavy rains. Stay tuned for updates from the National Stoolicane Center. Forecaster Stool

machinehead
The 12-month rate of change in the CPI is 2.2%. It was 2.1% in June and July. The numbers appear to be smoothed. Laurence Meyer on Crapvision says the Fed may fiddle with the wording of its press release to acknowledge more strength in GDP growth. But employment will be described as weak, and disinflation as a greater risk than inflation. No positive surprises for Wall Street, in other words. GregFokker
9:02am FOMC MEETING CONVENES AT FEDERAL RESERVE BUILDING "Ah, Rookie, glad you could could make it," rumbles Al Green's salutation. "Oh Al, wild horses..." muses Bernanke, the soles of his feet happily detecting the hum of the printing presses and atomic particle accelerators from the bowels of the Marriner S. Eccles building. "Spot of tea, Sirs?" interrupts a bow-tied servant, his PhD in economics in awe of the congregation of power standing before him.
