VOA News

28 Sep 2004, 17:25 UTC

Kazakhstan has begun construction of the second phase of a 3,000 kilometer oil pipeline that will deliver Caspian oil to western China.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Vladimir Shkolnik made the announcement in Astana after returning from the ground-breaking ceremony in Atasu, in central Kazakhstan.

The pipeline, which is expected to deliver annually up to 20 million tons of crude oil to China's western Xinjiang region, will cost $700 million. Its construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

China on terror alert as National Day approaches

BEIJING, Sep 28 (Reuters) Railway stations are packed and Tiananmen Square has been scrubbed clean ahead of China's week-long National Day holiday which comes against a backdrop of increasing concern about the global threat of terror.

Police have been reinforced by anti-terror forces for the holiday that begins on Friday, with millions of people already packing their bags and heading to their home provinces or taking off abroad in one of the world's largest migrations of people.

''As China's 55th National Day draws near, Beijing's security departments are mobilising for more anti-terrorism manoeuvres in an effort to keep the city safe during the holiday,'' Xinhua news agency said.

Dollar Falls; Fed's Hoenig Says Lower Currency Helps Trade Gap

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar fell against the yen in Asia after Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas President Thomas Hoenig said a lower dollar ``helped'' with the U.S. trade deficit and that the news on inflation is ``good.''

The U.S. current account shortfall grew to a record in the second quarter, the Commerce Department said this month. The deficit was equivalent to 5.7 percent of the nation's $11.6 trillion economy, from 5.1 percent in the first quarter. A weaker dollar helps narrow the trade gap by reducing the cost of U.S. exports, boosting overseas sales.

``Hoenig saying the current account deficit may continue to be wide is hurting the dollar,'' said Keizo Tanaka, manager of the market trading office in Tokyo at Resona Bank Ltd. ``Good news on inflation indicates the Fed will just maintain the measured pace for its rate increase, also weighing on the dollar a bit.''

As at 12:22 p.m. in Tokyo, the dollar fell to 111.07 yen from 111.37 late yesterday in New York, according to EBS, an electronic foreign-exchange dealing system. It may fall to 111 yen in Asia, Tanaka said.

so the checkpoints caught too many criminals driving w/o licenses, insurance and drunk! what do you do if you're in CA? why, you cancel the checkpoints :o . drunk drivers are lucky they are not SHOT on the spot, let alone have the huevos to piss and moan. i see someone has judicously ended my stay in political stool - cant say i blame them, but between all the tongue-in-cheek blather there was some really weird stuff to talk about. i caught a drunk driver after he killed a trash-can at the local gas station. the police however took over 1/2-hour to get there, so i ended up driving he and his senora home and a guy from the station drove their car. one good stool and one good deed a day, and maybe ill get into heaven, or at least canada  .

Challenges Facing the Accounting Profession Today

Perhaps someone should tell Bies that the GSEs are not part of the government and that US taxpayers have no direct obligation what so ever to bail them out. :o

Having said that, it seems that this is preparing us taxpayers to pay for either the bailout of FNM/FRE and/or the purchase of all thier stock. :(

Yobob, inflation is here, dang it! CiCi's pizza raised their price from $2.99 to $3.99. That's a thirty percent rise in cost of living, dude.

The local A & W raised their burger prices about 30%. Guess what, nobody else in town did. Guess who has the shortest lines to the drive-up window now. Scratch that - there are no lines at the A & W.

My favored haunt, a TCBY that does hand built sandwiches, a soup bar, and daily chef specials such as lasagne, bread and a salad for $5.79, has been offering 10% off all menu items once or twice a week.

So Duuuuuuude, change pizzarias!

As to all of this election crap -- I will be sooooooooooooo damn happy when this shit is over. I pray that Bush loses - and frankly I wouldn't care if he lost to Putin, Pluto, or the Pope. The cretin is a menace to the human race and has totally destroyed whatever good will the US had left.

I smell a set-up!

This morning, US oil/gasoline inventory numbers will be released. If the Government surprisingly "finds" a lot more oil on hand than it previously claimed, one might assume that the goal was to run the price through $50 to load the boat on the long side for oil and gold speculators, then drop the bomb of "greater than expected" inventory numbers to send the price of both plummeting just in time for the elections.

Would they do that? Would they just lie? Naaah. Would they?
