Jorma
Our 'risk' with the Chinese is an economic one. That said they have their hands full with a population which makes all comparisons of domestic or foreign politics almost absurd. To put their military might in perspective, since they have no Navy their prosective invasion of Taiwan was called by one wag the million man swim. I don't discount the threats on many fronts but they have to be put into perspective, including the historical one which is that for 5000 years China has been insular. If savings are a good measure of economic power then economic power is moving inexorably to Asia. One of the nuttiest things ever done was allowing China full WTO trade rights and privledges while at the same time their banking system is not transparant to any degree. Their currency is not freely traded. Access to their markets is strictly regulated, and on and on and on. Clinton not only sold the Democratic party down the river on this he put one more stake in America's manufacturing heart. This was done to the appluase of the GOP, who will soon turn against the Chinese, at least rhetoricaly, in order to gain votes.
plantigrade
Link to "China Dream" @amazon Debunks the myth of China as a perfect capitalist frontier; big Chinese banks are opaque and insolvent.
