All Ords made an attempt to close up but didn't quite make it.  The index finished -0.6% with sectors ranging from Consumer Staples -1.9% to Energy +1.5%.

Over in Asia, China +0.5%, Hong Kong -0.8%, India -0.2% and Nikkei -1.6%.

I would advise staying out of the cafe's in Australia, new threat of Isilmonella. I don't know if it's worse than "fries pulls out of the rotten child" though.

 

There seems to be some doubt that it's a terrorist plot in spite of the flag being displayed.  Have to say it doesn't seem to be their style.  5 of the hostages have been released but the siege continues...

Shorts covering

 

The net-long position in WTI rose by 6,894 contracts to 191,268 futures and options in the week ended Dec. 9, the most since Oct. 7, U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show. Short positions decreased 8.5 percent while long positions increased 0.3 percent.
