rog Posted August 27, 2003 Report Share Posted August 27, 2003 Yesterday someone asked how the gov't income data can show consistent growth in disposable income despite the consistent loss of jobs in the broader economy. In large part the growth in income over the last two years has been due to the imputed benefit of home ownership. The gov't calculates an adjustment to income based on the rise of home values vs rental prices and the percentage of home ownership. Since low rates have caused both home values and home ownership to increase while at the same time rents have generally decreased this imputed value has risen substantially.
