The brown one
This question goes out to everyone using a DSL line: Do you need to have standard telephone service from your telco in order to have DSL? It's an important question, because if I were to switch to VOIP, as I want to do, it would be with the intention of canning my crapola local phone service and saving the 30$ per month. But if that 30$ crapola local line is necessary for the DSL access, well, you get the picture. ANyone? Bueller? A good question Greg. I have a DSL connection via the phone co. that owns ALL the land lines to every house with a phone in the Netherlands.DSL has saved me a small fortune as,before that,I was on a dial-up(pay per minute on line and as slow as hell 4.3Kb/sec.Now 10x faster. Everybody(almost) has a cable connection and in urban areas cable internet is available via the cable. Here the cable has been used mainly for tv.The local councils owned the cable nets until they were "privatized" and sold off to the scum bags like UPC. Internet via cable is not available where I live(small village) although cable tv is the norm.Cable provides 25 or so channels free(small cable charge per month). If you desire Formula 1, footie, films or porn then these are available at an extra charge and a decoder(set-top box) needs buying. Because with a land-line you always pay line rental to the phone monopolist every month, some people have chosen to not pay for a phone line because of the monthly phone rental fee and have gone 100% cell-phone.That's fine if you never use the net but internet via cell phone is expensive. My internet price per month using DSL is a flat ?17 but my line rental is the same or more on top.Cable is an expensive extra if you retain the phone line.Cable for internet is around ?40/month and you need a cable modem/ethernet card. The cable companies here offer phone via cable(not VOIP yet) but you still pay per minute although not as much as the phone monopoly! I've had DSL for a year with no probs and my brother-in-law has cable internet. I have a download max/month but my b-i-l(cable) doesn't.My max is 5gig/month which is sufficent for me--just a surfer and not a downloader! The damned nerve! Cheeky bastards! The whole point of phone-via-cable is flat rate (and VOIP)! To the barricades, comrades! It'll all be moot soon anyway. Just when you get all set up and comfortable with your home VOIP configuration... your city will roll out citywide WiFi and all of your friends will be talking on their stylish WiFi "cell" phones and looking down their nose at you and your archaic "phone adaptor". anotherone
Looks like someone was selling Bunds to buy US T-Bones and then hedging euro long>Does that make sense Ah..no. Sounds like organized support is moving from the dollar to the US bond. Perhaps the new strategy is to let the US$ fall - slowly - at the same time pushing bond yields down. So,if I'm a buyer of UST,I have to hope that the the price of the T-bone goes up more than the USD goes down+4% interest pa !Otherwise I lose money on the deal.Seems pretty sensible to me Or a major player is moving out of equities and into bonds while support operations are keeping equities propped up.. On second thought, maybe that is where the bloated repo pool is going--bonds.

purdymouth
"And it should be noted in passing that Kerry has personally questioned Bush?s service, while Bush has not personally questioned Kerry?s" why would Shrub need to question Kerry's service? "champagne air guard unit" Shrub has the Karl Rovian Swift Liars to do it for him plausible deniability... the Reagan/Bush way Kerry... on the boat... on the river... serving the nation... Bush... champagne unit... better things to do... Daddy's lapboy prince... "a fine pilot" (over Texas)
