:D Welcome to B4 the Bell. :D Newbies should watch and learn before jumping into this Cuissinart of a market, and there may be no better place to learn than here. Decorum is expected - but seldom occurs. Fun, informative and free -where else can you get a deal like that? Off topic posts during trading hours should be brief, but before and after the bell, there really is no such thing as off topic. The one over-riding rule is respect for your fellow participants and their views, regardless of how demented they may appear.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The pharmaceutical industry, fighting to defeat proposals that would give U.S. patients easier access to cheaper Canadian drugs, is making the most of its chance for face time with lawmakers at the GOP convention.

Drug companies are well-represented on the social calendar in New York with events large and small.

They include an afternoon tea with New York state first lady Libby Pataki, sponsored by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals; a nomination-night party for top members of President Bush's re-election team, co-sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb; and a breast-cancer awareness luncheon funded by Novartis Pharmaceuticals.

Pfizer is one of the most active drug makers. Its events include a supper for the Colorado delegation at Tavern on the Green and an evening reception at the landmark Rainbow Room in honor of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

The companies believe reaching out to decision-makers at all levels of government is particularly important at a time when Congress and several states and communities are considering proposals that would allow residents to shop for medication north of the border.

"It is important that we decisively convey our side of the story. We need to emphasize that there are real safety risks associated with importation," said Jeff Trewhitt, a spokesman for the industry's biggest lobby, the Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America.

"reaching out....." We in the US should be very proud that we have the best politicians money can buy. Want to talk to your Senator? How much money do you have? The corruption of our government knows no bounds. Why would you spend tens of millions to get a job that pays a measley 130K a year? Ever see a poor politician? Well, I mean poor in the monetary sense not as is in job performance.

"real safety risks ......." Yeah, we shouldn't import any drugs. Oops a lot of the big sellers are already made overseas. The only difference between US drugs and Canadian drugs is which ship they're on. The only safety risks the drug companies are worried about is the safety of their outrageous profits. These guys make the oil industry look like charity workers. Looks to me like the mafia went legit.

The Footsie is banging it's head on 4500 - again. Gemany's Crack market, aka das Dax, is hanging at 3800 while those crazy Japanese have been hitting the sake a bit too much lately with the Nikkme floating like a fluffy turd at 11,127. Soon the invisible hand will quietly push the flush lever.

Unless we get some sort of reversal, London appears to be setting up NY for a metal slam. Time for the big dealers to short sell the piss out of the paper markets again I'm afraid.

Gas in B.C. jumped 45  cents  a gallon today or 14 cents @ litre.  Could be the Pre-Holiday ramp or the future deliveries kicking in-watch heating oil, NG and Gas ramp when the first cold weather hits.  Interestingly while visiting our youngest son last week who lives in a part of the Island not served by NG his Oil Company has a program whereby if he registers and pays a $50.- fee by today they will guarantee the Winter price will NOT exceed todays retail price, they have to be hedged big time-Huh!

Scammers are everywhere... friend said today, that his sister, who resides in Mass., near Boston, had a similiar proposal. More or less, "pay me this much now & I'll give some great deal." Well my friends sister decided to call around, she finds out there are other suppliers that'll give a much better deal.

I'm telling you Brian, being a crude scheduler for any refining outfit, right here, right now, has got to be the worst job. IMHO, I think some folks out there in the refining biz are gonna get it good.

PS... I think the gas prices somewhat decline, after Labor day. I'll be watching the profit margins like a hawk.

Simmons Co. updates every Monday. Last week I think was the bottom for the short term. Refiners better hope that was it.

Ok, If I'm reading what you're saying or implying correctly, you say refining margins are at a low point. Why? According to all the crap we're being fed, there is record demand for gasoline, relatively tight oil supplies, and marginal refining capacity. All of that says the price of gasoline should be rising. Are you telling us that refiners have no pricing power? That seems improbable at best. Either demand is not what is widely reported or someone is forcing an artificially low price.

Brian I'm curious if those close to the border make it a habit to cross over to fuel up? A quick trip over with a trunk load of prescription meds sold on the street corner and then return with a trunk full of cigarettes and roof rack full of jerry cans. Grandma could make a living.

The massive purchases of US Treasuries by foreign central banks continues to drive down long bond yields, for now, but the housing credit bubble shows no signs of recovery. :o

Mortgage Applications Ease in Aug 27 Week

September 01, 2004 07:00:00 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New applications for U.S. home loans eased last week for the second week in a row even though 30-year mortgage interest rates decreased slightly, an industry group said on Wednesday.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted market index, a measure of mortgage activity, eased for the week ending Aug. 27 by 0.6 percent to 642.7 from the previous week's 646.3.

The Washington trade group's purchase index, a gauge of new loan requests for home purchases, also eased last week by 0.1 percent to 443.1 from 443.7 in the prior week.

The group's seasonally adjusted refinancing index decreased last week by 1.1 percent to 1,804.1 from the previous week's 1,824.9.

Thirty-year mortgage rates, excluding fees, averaged 5.75 percent, down 0.03 percentage point from the previous week and down 0.50 percentage point from a year ago.

:o :P

There is some evidence the last few weeks that increased gasoline imports - from of all places Europe - have arrived and added to the available supply, pushing down margins. This may be temporary.

Surprisingly probably to the average American, there are no increased gasoline imports lately from OPEC - depsite their many pronouncements to 'help' drive down prices.

To those of you who have noticed that I have not kept pace with the regular update schedule on the different features of the Anals, I apologize. I will update the gold report this morning, and intend to update Uncle Buck and the Long Bong Hit. Probably won't get to the MoGauge, but there's nothing new there. It was unchanged.

I will be getting plywood and boarding up the house today. I intend to do a quick update of the Anals after the close today. I am going to Macon GA for a few days where the intention is to ride out what should be a tropical storm by that point, and then we'll see what the deal is. Hopefully, the storm will make a glancing blow here, and I will still have a home to return to. I am praying for everybody here in Florida. This is not going to be pretty.

Many tanks for your support. My thoughts are with all of you Stoolies here in Florida. May the Mother Nature have mercy on us. But to tell you the truth, I think She is really really pissed right now.

U.S. Loses Trade Cases and Faces Penalties

Aug. 31 - The World Trade Organization on Tuesday authorized the European Union and seven other leading American trading partners to impose more than $150 million in retaliatory sanctions on exports from the United States. The ruling comes after Congress refused for two years to repeal a tariff subsidy for American companies that the W.T.O. found to be in violation of global trade laws.

The decision by the trade organization, based in Geneva, is the latest example of several cases where Washington has been found to be in breach of international trade rules. The United States lost a battle on a complaint by Brazil and other developing countries over $3 billion in cotton subsidies and Congress has declined to rewrite legislation that provided what the W.T.O. found to be an unfair tax giveaway to companies doing business abroad.

Adding to the problems for American companies, the W.T.O. ruled on Monday and Tuesday against the United States and in favor of Canada in cases involving Canadian wheat and lumber.

Twig-

One of the forecast models has the Hurricane going west across the state. Another has it skirting the east coast. Yesterday I spent nearly 4 hours lining up hotel rooms. There are very few rooms left inland. Originally I lined up something in Orlando, after being unable to find anything in Tampa. But now the primary track has Orlando taking a direct hit with it possibly being in the NE quadrant with the storm over water, so I don't think that's a good place to hunker down. I chose central GA, because by that point the storm will have lost most of its wind speed. Flooding will still be an issue.

Good luck Doc

thesun is in Arcadia, FL

We are starting to say goodbye to friends as they are starting to leave.

Some are talking as thought they will not be returning in the near future.

Those who have the means and no job in the community are going to leave.

As I said yesterday, I was amazed how the market moved up after the Charlie.

And I am amazed how the market is moving up as this MONSTER is slowly getting closer.

I know how to read charts.

http://www.goes.noaa.gov/browsh.html

This chart is telling me that we are being lied to when it comes to the point of contact with land.

I am still waiting for it to start turning north.

Sleddog, can you put up that link of the projection of this storm.
