Brian and Threadbare, truly enjoyed your last posts.

I am 52 and both parents went through the depression.

When my 5 children were growing up my parents were next door in the duplex my father and I built. Instant and safe baby sitters.

Per the article of Threadbare's, if there were more shared habitations and community gardens energy and food supply would not be a problem. The problem is that each one wants only their own things and have no concern for their fellows needs. By the way socialism and communism don't work as the Plymouth Colony showed as each has to have " his own vine and fig tree". Powerful words brought to you by Isaiah on the discription of paradise.

Regards education, at the country school in Fresno that I attended we were taught the Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes AND how to diagram sentences the SIXTH!!! grade. :o

Kerry lags Bush badly in the only poll that matters: the electoral college. Bush 301, Kerry 237.  Kerry made up some ground last week, but it's probably over looking at it from this viewpoint. Bush wins.

Not so fast Dust... A different poll where Kerry wins the electoral collage.

Current Electoral Votes

And that's without Florida..every Democrat in the state will turn out to vote this time around..don't think Florida is a gimme for bush..

However, the Republican's (Primarily from the South) control the Powerbase and technically control the fed spending decisions.

The Republican party was founded in Jackson, Michigan in 1854 ... and of course was the party of Lincoln.

For a hundred years after the War Between the States, the "Solid South" was 100% Democratic ... as were, curiously, the old urban centers of the North. (Brooklyn native Walter Karp's Indispensable Enemies: The Politics of Misrule in America delves further into this strange polarity.)

My parents, who grew up in East Texas, NEVER have voted for a Republican - EVER. When I was a kid, we didn't even know any Republicans.

The Republican party made major strides in the South after the 1960s, but there's some evidence that those gains are eroding.

Historically, the Republican party's base was in the midwestern and intermountain states. It only recently colonized the South, and it's not clear whether those gains will hold.

The House majority leader, Denny Hastert, is from Illinois. The Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, is from Tennessee. The current Republican president is from Texas, but his family has New England roots. New England, long ago, was staunchly Republican.

For all stoolies. Where do you think the bottom is at? I say sub 4,000 but not by more than 15%. I also say that number will be reached no later than 2011.

TE - you've put that 4000 figure out a couple of times now - I don't know if I'd go that low.

Just basing my guess on PE ratio and assuming that earnings will not go down between now and 2011 (just inflation alone should take them up - there will also be a possibility of a favorable currency exchange rate and so on) but let's say they remain stable. In that scenario the PE of a DOW at 4K would be around 7. You know that the market makers will never allow a PE much lower that twice that on the DOW. So if we're looking at a 14 PE that would put the index at about 8200.

Thus that's my guess = 8200 by 2011.

Many of the Dow "industrial" companies have become finance companies..when the debt bubble bursts, as it it finally appears to be starting to do, those companies won't have any earnings, but large losses..the question will be, how fast can they be replaced in the Dow, as they go bankrupt..

My monthly stuff says Dow 6500 likely IF we rollover here..and if things get really bad, 3-4000..and if things get really, really bad, sub 2000..we'll see in the fullness of time..

As things stand now, I think the US stock markets will go sideways for the rest of the decade. I expect a trading range between the 2002 bottom and the 2004 top.

Doc,

I had a lenghty response but unforunately children decided to use and shut down the office computer.

As far as the denial of thousand of voters to vote in the last election.

If you have proof of this, not heresay, suppositions, theory's, please let

us all see these absolute facts.

When you say denied i envision police barracading entrances, mafia style

threats, loss of job threats. I would need to know the specifics.

If you want to talk about potential fraud i think we could all start with

the heavyily democratic inner cities of Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit.

But we would both need lots of time and effort to for either of us to prove these things, i believe.

Perhaps if the liberal press didn't declare a victory for Al Gore in Florida

before the north western part of the state was finished voting it would have

circumvented the need for the recount.

As far as Kent State. If it happened again I would be with you on that one.

I made my feelings known in a strong way within

my group and political sphere. It was an exception in our country as opposed to the norm in so many parts of the world.

As far as the mention of poor blacks being denied in Florida the right to vote,

it is too bad that as open minded as we have become we try to distinguish things such as poor Blacks, Whites, Asians, Hispanics.

Does it make them any less impacted financially if they are poor at the same level.

Blacks are mostly not black, whites as we are called, are not only not white but not even a real color. We learn to live with it.

I doubt you will be bruatilized in the streets of Florida if you wish to protest

the fact that your canidiate didn't win.

We all Have the same rules to play by. A minority of all groups cheat.

The majority play by the rules.

I was taught by people i truly respect to review in my mind and filter out

as much as possible anything that would be grossly offensive. We are all

human. When we downgrade and judge groups to make them the enemy

of our basic concepts of political belief, we are truly the victims of our own stupidty.

Name calling at first wounds and hurts, then the heart becomes calloused

and then i believe the hatred and all its vileness spews forth.

We don't know all about the individuals who vote conservative/ liberal and we don't

know all about the thoughts and ideas of our social opposites.

One thing i do believe is when we bleed its red and when denigrated it hurts.

I hope I can always respectfully agreee to disagree with people.

By the way I believe a common cause will always go beyond the vain ideas

or judgements we put on skin color.

Sorry you missed the long version. Your probally not.

As alway

I like AA, PG, JPM and C for good long term shorts on the DOW. Although there are others most look range bound and will probably just dance around in a small range for several years.

The obvious ones - INTC, IBM, WMT, MMM are hedge favorites so they would probably not make good long term holdings. Every time they go down they are bought with both hands by hungry hedgers.

SBC and VZ are both at the end of their respective strings. All they can do from here on out is collect existing local service bills as their expansion potentials are pretty much done. Everyone who wants DSL has DSL and long distance is cheaper any number of dozen other ways. Doesn't mean they are going down - just means they are going nowhere.

That's my two cents.

Well you're right and I'm glad we have a place where everyone regardless of their cockamaimy ideas (such as mine) are welcome.

What do you see the Dow doing over the next several years?

Thanks Black Prince, Co-housing isn't centralized communism or socialism really. It's a voluntary life style where people cooperate but at the same time retain a certain amount of privacy. It's more like a third world model of interdependancy within an extended family, so has a natural feel to it. It's been successful for thousands of years. Our current way of living is a failed experiment in faux independance.

Butterfield, Your nieces wear mink? oHmygod. They're in for a big surprise. They may be having a meltdown over electronic toys today, tomorrow they'll be fighting for an extra helping of rice and beans. Hey, it might be good for them.

For Marines, a Frustrating Fight

Some in Iraq Question How and Why War Is Being Waged

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...4-2004Oct9.html

"Every day you read the articles in the States where it's like, 'Oh, it's getting better and better,' " said Lance Cpl. Jonathan Snyder, 22, of Gettysburg, Pa. "But when you're here, you know it's worse every day."

[...]

As a reporter began to ask Maio another question, the interview was interrupted by the scream of an incoming rocket and then a deafening explosion outside the platoon's barracks. Pandemonium ensued.

"Get down! Get down!" yelled the platoon's radio operator...

County election supervisors are doing their best to keep Afro Americans off the voter roles. Legal challenges are pending from the Democratic Party. If it's close, it will end up in the courts again.

The SNL cartoon last night was fairly provocative. The Four Ex-Presidents were on,

Ol' President ClownShoes got them to round up all the enemy combatants in Florida

(blacks and other non-persons) and deposit them in "Camp Freedom"(official opening,Nov.3,2004).

Then, all the real ex-presidents(pre-USSA) burst forth from their resting places and wreaked havoc on the Cabal(hey, they call themselves this). It concluded with Shrub being hung upside down on a wall by his scrotum by a Presidental Zombie.

Talk about yer Bizarro "Day of the Dead".

Very enjoyable and very encouraging to boot.

The only way to defeat the fascist warmongers is by mocking them continually and relentlessly,IMO.

I don't deal in hearsay, "Patriot". I deal in facts. If you are not familiar with the fact that thousands of black voters were prevented from voting in Duval County, then I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the facts. I suggest you familiarize yourself with the current issues involving voter registration campaigns in Florida counties controlled by Repugnican Election Supervisors.

And in Ohio I might add.

As for the rest of your post about poor blacks and poor whites, I ahve no idea what are you talking about. I didn't even broach that subject. I didn't say they were poor. The people affected lived in majority black districts. They were Afro Americans. These districts vote heavily Demoratic. They were, and are, being disenfranchised by Repugnican election supervisors, and gerrymandered into marginality by Repugnican state houses, sanctioned by Federal Courts packed with Repugnicans.

What does that have to do with northern big city elections from 44 years ago. This is now, that was then. It's cheating, and it's wrong. It is egregiously wrong if it is a pattern of abuse by a single party designed to gain monopoly control of the levers of government in order to misuse its power. Did the Democrats cheat 40 years ago? I have no doubt that they did. Too bad they weren't better at it. Nixon got elected anyway in 68 and what did we get? The biggest lying anti-constitutional sack of shit in history. Until now.

What does Democrratic cheating 40 years ago have to do with today. Not a damn thing. It is an attempt to divert attention from the issue at hand, which is what is going on in this world right here, right now, not 10 or 20 or 30 or 44 years ago. NOW. I suggest, dear "Patriot" that you familiarize yourself with the facts, and keep them straight, and not change the subject, before accusing anyone of dealing in hearsay, and misrepresenting their words.
