FauxCaster Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Just my .0186 Euros (2 cents): First off, thanks, Doc and Stoolies. This is truly a great message board with the sharpest tacks in the box, no doubt. I find most of the posts informative and useful. Even the annoying ones reveal something of human nature I can count as knowledge gleaned. Captialstool is often a short list of rambling conversations on many subjects ALL WITHIN the same topic thread. I blame wndysrf for being so damn good, arguably the best amateur columnist. His column began attracting some heavy-hitters with some great knowledge and opinions who only post in Mark-to-market. The conversation became so good over there, many of the topics that would have once graced LOB on their own now take place in mini-threads in Mark's column only. Captialstool's LOB used to be bustling with 20 threads a day. Now somedays every thread seems to be one long rambling conversation on many subjects within the same thread with few new topics. Instead of one subject being discussed per topic, we have many under a few threads. These giant threads are intimidating if you're just logging on. I know I MUST read Mark-to-market's 20+ pages just so I can read all the gems posted there. Mark and his posse are that good, I just can't miss it. I'm begging you geniuses to bring some of your observations to LOB for more general discussion, rather than just being interwoven in 15 conversations all taking place in ONE thread. Even a thread only about Hypertiger's fractional reserve banking had a sub-thread on nanotechnology. My unsolicited opinion is to take off-message posts to the main board (or where ever appropriate), you can quote part of the old thread to branch off and become a new thread. BAREister does this occasionally when the subject of LAWYERS comes within UDDER threads. And thanks to Miss Moneypenny for dragging some the T/A posts out of IDS. I've got no problem with long threads, I just wish new topics would get a chance to stand on their own. It's often hard to check up on the capitalstool messages when to get into a conversation you have to read all 5-20 pages first. It'd be easier read the new subject lines. If Doc doesn't agree with my request, please feel free to delete this post, it is YOUR board above all else.
Pretzel Logic Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Yeah, I've had the same thought. NOW -- let's see if we can turn this thread into a rambling conversation.
Guest yobob1 Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Actually there are more new thread started than you think, it's just that LOB doesn't receive them all or they get moved. One of the reasons other than nsf time I had my board scratched. I just felt we were getting too many specialized boards going and that was dilluting the overall effect. Personally I can see maybe 6 boards but no more. I think cross pollenization, i.e. exposing the max # of people to the most variety can be a good thing. Of course anyone is free at any time to start whatever they want, wherever they want, but if it doesn't have a good category match it will be moved.
FauxCaster Posted February 17, 2003 Author Report Posted February 17, 2003 YB, I'm not asking for quantity, I'm just asking that a divergent conversation within a parent topic get taken to a new post (or additionally to a new post). This not strictly for the purpose of a thriving LOB board, but for the clarity of mind and ease of reading threads. I feel like I'm in a busy cafeteria with a dozen converstation gong on all around me. In fact, all the conversations interest me, but I'm not able to particiipate in all at once or even keep track of them since some of the threads stretch into double digits and they are not on just one subject but many.
DrStool Posted February 17, 2003 Report Posted February 17, 2003 Foacks Caster- I hole hartedly agree. The problem is that I do not have enough time to moderate the boards. Ther is a function for splitting threads when they start ot veer off the original topic. One or more posts can be segregated into a new topic. I could also be mroe aggressive about closing topics when they begin to meander. We prabably need moderators with the time, inclination and talent to exercise some editorial judgement in this regard. Anyone interested?
Pretzel Logic Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Sure, Doc, I'd be willing to take a crack at it. I spend a fair amount of time on here.
MaxxPain Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Doc, you have nothing to worry about. This site has the highest quality discussions anywhere. It may not end up perfectly organized. Oh well.
ThorAss Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Tell me about it. A few months back I almost quit in disgust over the issue. As a last gasp I started a movement to begin a golden IDS over at the outpost and with the help and backing of Charmin and the other BUGS (as Deep Purple would say) we found a place to play. Still there are those who continue to post their golden goodies on Mark's M2M. So be it. What irks me are the people who ask questions there which would be unnecessary if they spent more time at the Outpost and less time posting.
