Pigeon Drop
A multi millionaire eccentric stoolie has invited you to his mansion for dinner. After dinner, over a glass of fine cognac he tells you that he has a proposition for you. He leads you to a brightly lit room with three sacks on the floor, each sack containing a number of gleaming one ounce gold coins. The sacks are of different sizes, varying from a few hundred coins in the smallest to around a thousand coins in the largest. All the coins are identical in appearance, but alas he tells you that two of the sacks contain coins made of worthless counterfeit gold, while one sack contains genuine gold coins. While the genuine coins weigh exactly 1.00 ounces each, the counterfeit coins, though exactly the same size and shape, weigh 1.10 ounces each. Also in the room is a scale accurate to 0.01 ounces. The way it operates is you place what you want weighed on the platform, and press a button. There is no display on the scale, instead a paper tape is printed and comes out of the side of the scale imprinted with the weight. Finally, there is only enough paper tape left in the scale for one weighing. After taking one weight in this manner, the scale may not be used again. You are allowed to carry any one sack home with you that evening to keep. How will you determine which sack to take home?
SevenOfEleven
Hey... this sounds exactly like a quarterly report!
Pigeon Drop
OK I edited it finally to make it read right. I think it is correct now.
SevenOfEleven
OK I edited it finally to make it read right. I think it is correct now. I was only teasing - corporate reports tend to read like math puzzles (to me anyway!). I'm not smart enough for this - I'd have to bite a few coins like underdog does as shoe shine boy
Drano
I will pull out the gun I borrowed from Hypertiger and take all three sacks.
SevenOfEleven
Okay, okay - I think I've got this! Take one coin from two different bags and pop 'em on the scale together. If the weight is 2.2oz then the bag you didn't grab from is it. If the weight is 2.1oz then... uh... carp... bite one  *sigh* Can I borrow your gun Drano?
