A Free Sack Of Gold Coins

Recommended Posts

A multi millionaire eccentric stoolie has invited you to his mansion for dinner. After dinner, over a glass of fine cognac he tells you that he has a proposition for you. He leads you to a brightly lit room with three sacks on the floor, each sack containing a number of gleaming one ounce gold coins. The sacks are of different sizes, varying from a few hundred coins in the smallest to around a thousand coins in the largest.

All the coins are identical in appearance, but alas he tells you that two of the sacks contain coins made of worthless counterfeit gold, while one sack contains genuine gold coins. While the genuine coins weigh exactly 1.00 ounces each, the counterfeit coins, though exactly the same size and shape, weigh 1.10 ounces each.

Also in the room is a scale accurate to 0.01 ounces. The way it operates is you place what you want weighed on the platform, and press a button. There is no display on the scale, instead a paper tape is printed and comes out of the side of the scale imprinted with the weight.

Finally, there is only enough paper tape left in the scale for one weighing. After taking one weight in this manner, the scale may not be used again.

You are allowed to carry any one sack home with you that evening to keep. How will you determine which sack to take home?

You take one coin from sack 1, two coins from sack 2, and three coins from sack three.

if the weight is:

6.50 choose sack 1

6.40 choose sack 2

6.30 choose sack 3

Do I win?
