Hmm.

"BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Discover Financial Services generated 12% growth in second-quarter profit but raised its cushion for loan losses as a result of ongoing turbulence in credit markets, financial results showed Thursday.

The Riverwoods, Ill.-based company DFS reported a profit of $234.1 million, or 48 cents a share, for the three months ended May 31, compared with $209.2 million, or 44 cents, earned in the year-ago second quarter.

anal cysts polled by Thomson Reuters had, on average, forecast earnings of 37 cents a share for the latest quarter.

"Despite the challenging economy, Discover delivered solid results," said Chief Executive David Nelms in a statement. In particular, he pointed to the performance of Discover's third-party payments business, which saw record network volume of $29 billion, up 33% from the prior year.

However, the company increased its loan-loss provision by 31%, to $210 million from $145 million, in a move that the credit-card issuer attributed to "higher net charge-offs reflecting recent credit trends."

Managed loans rose 2% in the second quarter to $47.8 billion, while Discover Card sales also climbed 2%, to $22.5 billion.

Discover also declared a cash dividend of 6 cents a share, payable on July 22 to stockholders of record on July 1.

In April, Discover reached an agreement with Citigroup Inc. C to acquire Diners Club International for $165 million. The deal is expected to close in July.

Earlier this week, rival MasterCard Inc. MA said it had reached agreement with American Express Co. AXP to settle an antitrust lawsuit, forcing it to pay as much as $1.8 billion. AmEx had alleged MasterCard had illegally blocked it from the bank-issued card business in the U.S.

MasterCard and Visa Inc. V have yet to settle a similar lawsuit from Discover.

With the U.S. stock market trading broadly lower, Shares of Discover lost about 1% in early action.

In January, when IYR was around 60ish, its approximate 2X inverse SRS was in the 140-150(spike) range.

Now, when IYR is at 61.47, SRS is at 102.73.

Which one is valued incorrectly?

Forget those 2x inverse funds for anything but daytrading. Learned it the hard way. I think for a longer term position a better alternative is deep in the money leap puts (2010). You can get ~4x leverage at very small premium. Liquidity and spread is an issue but this is not a daytrader tool.

Uh oh...

"So with a moribund market ahead, some investors are changing their strategy: instead of trying to find individual stocks or sectors that might rise in a down market, they're taking advantage of the broader market's trend downwards. That means shorting the market, or betting on stocks continuing to decline."

Anyone remember Maria Bartiromo's call to short the market during the last bear market? Her call was very close to the bottom, as I recall.

Sorry for the broken link, the board software seems to translate 'C N B C' into 'Crapvision', even if it appears in a URL.
