Brian4 and pistolpapa:

Great stories.....

Needless to say, my "MTV Generation" has no clue about real hardship..........

Rude awakening is near..............

I got a ton of them stories.

With the right attitude, the" rude awakening" could be an adventure.

Like when I was drivin' my 18 wheeler over a pass in Montana with ice all over the road.

I was scared shitless.

Then comes this kid on the CB comin' up the other side of the mountain sayin',

"Man this is great. Whee! I hope theres ice on the other side of the hill!"

I wasn't scared anymore.

  -another- great story pistol.

I do picture you as your avatar shows...with that big easy grin....and think of machinehead, and b4, that way as well. Funny about avatars.

uhh...I don't think of -wndy- as -his- avatar tho of course :P

hmmm....I suppose if others also tend to do so...then you stoolies must think of =me= as a huge block (head? ) of yellow iron, eh?

B4, sorry to hear of your cold. Hot bath first, with eucalyptus oil in it, then bed, my sweetie sez. :D

Wndy, your intelligence is plain for all to see, as is your work-ethic and your natural inclination to look and think ahead....so you'll do good in ANY environment I think. Nevertheless, you're right that there's going to be a difficult adjustment ahead.

Pistol has it right tho....it CAN be an adventure...our own 8-year odyssey out of the matrix and towards self-sufficiency has certainly been exhilarating in many ways. But there are going to be an awful lot of personally-dangerous conditions growing in magnitude as today's form of society collapses, which aren't present right now...making the trek more difficult to accomplish -pleasantly- in the future.

huh....I was just asking Robin if my spelling of "exhilarating" was right (it wasn't :P ) and she also read off the definition....

"to make joyous and energetic....elate.....to invigorate or stimulate"

how's that grab ya for positive vibes papa? :D

hey! I just thought of who you remind me of, pistol....the Donald Sutherland character in Kelly's Heroes !

WASHINGTON - The United States on Sunday warned US citizens living in or passing through the Nordic and Baltic states of possible imminent terrorist attacks in crowded public places in those countries.

Norway maybe?

Deputy leader of the Parliamentary Energy Commitee, Hallgeir Langeland (Socialist Left), now proposes that oil should be traded in Euro, rather than in US dollars.

Boy, when I read all the posts here I get the one sure-fire money-making idea for the future:

franchise "Dr. Kevorkian's Clinics" nationwide. "Are things difficult? Future seem hopeless? Relieve your pain quickly and permanently."

?

I know you're joking, Drano.

But it doesn't have to be that bad.

I don't know if you were around in the sixties. I just caught the tail end of it after the military but what I saw was that people could live together in peace and harmony.

They would rent big houses and just live together. All the food was shared and strangers were always welcome.

Some worked, some didn't. Some had money from home but everything was shared. There was no mine and yours.

I remember showing up at a park in Santa Cruz, Calif., with no money. A bunch of people set up a huge free feast with music and all and I found out about a place to find work. It was run free of charge to worker and employer by volunteers.

This fizzled in the mid seventies and drugs took their toll, but it was an experience many will not forget.

It is all in the attitude we have. Once a few start seeing that our only salvation is to love and help one another, it will get contagious.

Besides,

"All your private property,

Is target for your enemy,

And your enemy...

Is me."

-Jefferson Airplane

Pistol

Where was Wassily Leontieff in the 60's ? We could have used his input output analysis to keep the bullshit about sharing, down about 50 decibels or so--for if you rmember most of that moola that created those movable feasts was middle class dough that rolled down like thunder from middle-class parents indulging their layabout slacker children---

This is about---

Reality, the first casualty in a drug culture--I remember sitting around with dear friends smoking a very titan of a joint just loaded with dybamite sh*t that sent your doors of perception flying off their hinges--all of a sudden we started to stare at and comment on an acrylic painting I had done; it wa abstract and had a myriad of forms about which we commented and described--At first like a boiling cloud in the sky there was mutual agreement about"Lincon's Top hat" followed by "Bill's car " and so forth but shortly references were made to shapes in terms that were totally off the wall(pun intended)--And although I was under heavy influence I wasn't about to capitulate to anarchical Rohrschachians claiming to see what was to me evidently non-existent --

I saw for the first time what undisciplined bullshitting and concerted make-believe led to and from then on never looked back--there is no freedom worth anything that isn't coincident with some form of severe authority even if it be a Self Tyranny over one's own predispositin to bullshit himself to death

Dozer:

Point well taken about the fact that the nation was split at election time four years ago...leaving aside the fact that Gore won...the nation was obviously divided and remains so.

It just feels a hell of a lot more visceral to me now - well beyond anything this country has seen in my memory.  Notice how a polarizing issue like abortion for example is not even on the radar screen.  Remember how much focus it received in the past?  They've raised the bar to a whole new level with terror and war.

I find Bush's ads featuring grieving widows of fallen soldiers highly offensive.  We are in a war of HIS choosing in a land NOT CONNECTED IN ANY WAY to the events of 9/11...and good people are dying every day...and more than 2/3 of the people who will vote for Bush think the war in Iraq is all about 9/11.

It's the blatant disregard for the truth and the blatant attempts to disinform and bamboozle the American People that has me pissed off at this administration.  I could give a rat's ass about Kerry, but the truth matters to me a lot - and Bush has been lying his ass off...and we're in the midst of World War III as a direct result of it...though it has yet to be declared.

What's wrong with this picture?

Bush can't admit that he made any mistakes or second guess anything because then all of the people that he's brainwashed into believing that Iraq was behind 9/11 might have to actually wake up and re-evaluate their fervent support of him.

Getting behind the President in a time of War is of course the right and Patriotic thing to do.  But if Bush had attacked Argentina in response to 9/11, it would be no less ridiculous.  At some point, following a blind man off a cliff becomes a bad idea.

Plunger

With all due respect--Yes we are at the begginning of world war three but honestly it wasn't of Bush's choosing--can we ,for instance, stipulate that currently 14 of the wars involving Muslims are being fought far from the precincts of the US polity? Can we? Because it seems as if the entire world is in denial

Why just today I read a report about Ethnic Violence in NOrthwest China involving the Hans and the Muslim Hui wherin 115 were killed including 15 policeman--

Naturally the first person coming under suspicion is Sharon whose maniacal tentacles stretch everywhere==

I dont like sarcasm but sometimes......

Why not consider the Muslim frontier which crosses all the hemispheres of the earth like the volcanic earthquake inducing ring of fire, and which has reached a stage in its history that requires a warlike breakout;and with the US just being unlucky enough to be the filler of the Geopolitical variable X standing in Islams way ---

And by the way this Vanguard of Pan Islamism is comprised not so much of religous zealots as they are, using a word heretofore missing,NIHILISTS--

In order to understand them we need a Doteyevski and not the talking Beachballs of Crapvision

And this Pancslamis breakout was predicted by Spengler as early as 1914 way before the Us became a superpower

beardrech   Remeber John Ohara' novel titled "Appointment in Sammara"? You dont have to read it except for the Prefatory anecdote involving the angel of Death and his fleeing prey who escaped him by running away to Sammara--and when Death asked a group bystanders about the fugitive, noone knew -he answered,' How disappointing, I cannot remain here, for tomorrow I have an appointment in Sammara "..

Thanks for your persistence, Mars.

I got a new name for the service sector economy.

I will call it:

The Service-Retail Economy.

Now, this does not change the fact that it is doomed. It still depends on money/credit flow from outside which, at this time, it is not getting.

Higher prices for energy, commodities, health care, tuition, borrowing etc. will diminish the ability of those working in the service-retail economy from supporting each other.

And higher prices for these necessities will also diminish the ability of the disappearing upper-crust white collars from supporting it.

So,

These cash-flow-challenged individuals will of necessity learn how to solder pipes and replace exhaust systems and cook from scratch. And as they do that, they will pull cash flow away from plumbers, mechanics and restaurants.

The Service-Retail Economy.

Has sort of a fated sound to it, no?

Once again I must intrude on what appears to be portraits of the Pastoral by Fragonard

When you open up acerage and become self reliant and deserving of evry comfort your expenditure of toil and sweat deserve--you can be rest assured somewhere somehow naboring banditti, not knowing the difference between a wrench and screwdriver, will get wind of your demi-paradise and hunt you down

And why am i so certain of th econsequences ? Because the scxenarios entertained here are vaguely reminiscent of Feudalism and the darka ges before it matured

beardrech   And Hanky I feel for your son; but if I were you a loving father,I would persuade your son to look upon the years ahead enabling him to study and discover and feel and enjoy the exra years of freedom as long as they are productivly employed--Some of my cousins friends spent a few years like this during hard times and later when I understood what it was all about I ENVIED them

A wild weekend on the board - one of the best since I've been coming here. The fact that we can go through some intellectual "hard times" ourselves and come out the other end relatively intact means something - I don't know what - but something.

Now did anyone join me on going long the buck over night? Regardless of the currency selected you would have been on the right side of the trade for a nice quick profit.

Stay safe, stay well, and most of all, stay focused - going to be a long week.

Thanks for not pulling the plug Doc, we love you. Peace.

Beardrech...I always appreciate your point of view. Thanks.

I had an insightful visit to The Sports Authority sporting goods store yesterday.

Nike tennis shoes were at one time the most highly valued posessions of kids (and many adults) across this land. At the height of Michael Jordan's career, Nike defined American Consumerism with orgiasticly high endorsement deals and a commensurate level of paid advertising to back it up. Remember when Nike shoes cost over $100? Well, they don't any more.

What happened?

Other manufacturers figured out how to rip off designs similar to Nike's, emulate the same manufacturing techniques and processes and simply sell side by side with Nike based on price. If this sounds like the US auto industry in a nut shell, it is.

As the American Consumer becomes ever more price conscious, the faux status symbols of the nineties are becoming far less chic, and companies that were once geared for the American Consumer of yesterday are rapidly learning that they have priced their products out of their customer's willingness-to-pay zone.

Yobob's vision of deflation is present in the price of Nike shoes today. Supply exceeds demand, and the "death of brands" continues apace.

What's the hot new Nike advertising campaign on everyone's lips? What's the new "must have" Nike shoe design? Don't know? Neither do I.

There is a sea change afoot (pun intended), but apparently the market hasn't gotten the memo yet. When the reality of the situation is finally allowed to be reflected in the prices of stocks, this one is going to fall straight out of the sky.

DoubleClick, the Internet marketing company, said yesterday that it had hired Lazard to help it "explore strategic alternatives," effectively putting the company up for sale.

One of the few remaining advertising companies focused on the Internet that survived the dot-com crash, DoubleClick has struggled in recent years as the traditional advertising companies have turned to opportunities on the Internet while a raft of upstart competitors have also emerged.

DoubleClick, which has a market value of about $800 million, said it was also considering a "recapitalization, extraordinary dividend, share repurchase or a spin-off." anal cysts suggested that DoubleClick would sell its business piecemeal by its divisions.

A flier circulating extensively in black neighborhoods in Wisconsin carries the heading "Milwaukee Black Voters League." It asserts that people are not eligible to vote if they have voted in any previous election this year; if they have ever been found guilty of anything, even a traffic violation; or if anyone in their family has ever been found guilty of anything.

"If you violate any of these laws," the flier says, "you can get ten years in prison and your children will get taken away from you."

In Philadelphia, where a large black vote is essential to a Kerry victory in the crucial state of Pennsylvania, the Republican speaker of the Pennsylvania House, John Perzel, is hard at work challenging Democratic voters. He makes no bones about his intent, telling U.S. News & World Report:

"The Kerry campaign needs to come out with humongous numbers here in Philadelphia. It's important for me to keep that number down."

That's called voter suppression, folks, and the G.O.P. concentrates its voter-suppression efforts in the precincts where there are large numbers of African-Americans. And that's called racism.

These are days of shame for the United States. No one writing a civics text for American high school students would recommend this kind of behavior for a great and mighty nation. We have to figure out a way to extricate ourselves from Iraq and rebuild a truly representative democracy here at home. Right now we have a mess on both fronts.

It was Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, who said that "America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment."

HUD to Slightly Ease Loan Goals

For Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

By JAMES R. HAGERTY

Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

November 1, 2004; Page A4

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is expected today to disclose a new set of rules requiring Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to finance more homes for low-income people.

The requirements will be slightly less stringent than proposed earlier in the year, according to people briefed on the situation. A HUD spokesman declined to comment.

The earlier plan drew intense lobbying by the National Association of Home Builders, the National Association of Realtors, the Mortgage Bankers Association and other housing groups. Those groups warned that rules requiring Fannie and Freddie to finance more "affordable housing" might have "unintended consequences" that could hurt some poor and middle-income people struggling to afford houses.

Fannie and Freddie, chartered by Congress but owned by private shareholders, buy mortgages from banks and other lenders, providing funds for the lenders to make additional home loans.
