There is a reason there has been such a reaction against this style and Fokker summed it up. It's about empty space and discreet units. Perfect for a zenmaster, but pretty alienating for the average Westerner who's already becoming a part of the machinery at work. Architecture under the internationalists became a sort of tyranny of artlessness, fit for dental hygenists and the anal compulsive but woefully inadequate for those more sensuous than the average toaster. Le Corbusier proclaimed houses machines for living. Frank Lloyd Wright used to name houseflies in his studio after the Bauhaus architects and then nail them with fly-swatters. He had it right. To proclaim that something is artless because it does not express handcraftsmanship, natural expressions of materials and organic expressions of space is limiting oneself to a tyranny of ignorance and prejudice. You seem to be missing, as most Americans do, the very definition of ART. Sensuality is in the eye of the beholder. And a "home" is the life that people bring to a dwelling. Corbusier's "machine for resting" chaise lounge. Pure sensuality..... Go find the facts yourself - all you are putting forth are opinions - and not very convincing ones at that. I am of the view that the two party system is insane crap as for years we have been voting for the two failed parties over and over, so I will not defend either bush or kerry as all I see are two bonesman who will not defend the constitution. Doc can defend himself, of course, but please don't come here and represent yourself as a 'patriot' and try to get anyones goat. Here, everyone brings something to the party, not try to break it up. Brown Suguaro Posted October 10, 2004 Report Share Posted October 10, 2004 Gasoline prices: I have just returned from a short trip up the Calif. coast and back down the back side (east side) of the Sierra Mountains - great trip! (Well, actually I went 2,106 miles.) Here is what I paid for gasoline. I always find the lowest price gas, and try to plan ahead to where I think I will find low priced gas so as not to pay the higher prices in small towns or isolated locations in between. $1.91 Lake Havasu City. The price has just gone up from $1.87. $2.23 Ontario. This is between L.A. and San Bernardino on Interstate 10. Since Calif. has cleaner burning fuel requirements than Arizona, it costs more to refine. $2.23 San Luis Obispo. North of L.A. on highway 1, near Hearst's Castle, San Simeon. $2.15 Santa Cruz. This is a tourist location, bedroom community for San Jose area, and a truck farming area (lettuce, carrots, brussel sprouts, broccoli, strawberrys, etc.). $2.19 Fort Bragg. This is an isolated tourist town on the ocean north of San Francisco. The large lumber mill which made the town is now closed for some time. $2.15 Sacramento. In the central valley on Interstate 80 halfway between S.F. and Reno. I have watched Sacramento's economy be dominated by Aerojet building rockets in the 50's and 60's (now a small operation) to military in the 70's and 80's with Mather and McClellan Air Force Bases and Sac. Army Depot (all gone) and now satellite operations of Silicon Valley high tech firms with Intel, H.P., Apple, NEC, and others in the area (when a person from the Bay Area is assigned to these facilities, they tell their co-workers they got Sac'd). There is a lot of government there, too, as Sacramento is the state capitol. $2.15 Minden Nevada. This is on the back side of the Sierra's about an hour south of Reno. At South Lake Tahoe the price was $2.49, so glad I popped over the hill. Also, all the way down the back side on Rte 395 (tourist towns) gas was $2.49 until I reached the 395 / 58 junction (Kremmers Junction). 323 miles on that leg. $2.15 Kremmers Junction. North of San Bernardino on Rte 395, and 40 miles west of Barstow. This is desert and not far from Edwards Air Force Base where the Space Shuttle has landed, and not far from Mojave where Space Ship One now operates from. From there it was 177 miles to Needles Calif. on the Calif / Arizona border, and another 40 miles down here to Lake Havasu City, hard desert the whole way. So there you have it, and now that I look at it, I don't know why gas was so high priced near the L.A. area. Seems like it should have been less. Also, once I got to San Bernardino the air really started getting foul, so that by the time I got just north of L.A. it was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Why people chose to live there is beyond me. When I got northeast, to Ventura, the air cleared as the wind was blowing off the ocean. As an aside, I stayed in motels paying from $45 to $65 per night, and found the beds all too firm for my old body. Miss my RV, Yobob. Gonna get me a woman and an RV. The SF receiver got away with a push-off for the score. The TV Color Guy said "He wanted it more than the defender. . .if you're not cheatin' in that situation you don't want to win". This is the essence of what is wrong with Pro sports (all of them) these days (if not always, from the beginning of Big Time Sports). This is what is wrong with politics, too. And Big Business. And organized religion. And what has become the "American" way of doing things. In a nationalistic sense, it becomes a kerry-like morass to explain how it is better to lose honestly than to win by cheating -- but the reverse is also a sticky point. Enron, Worldcom, AA, etc, all believed that Cheating only happens when you actually get caught at it, and that it is an essential component to "success", "winning". Professional Politicians, as we have seen in our free-and-open, no-hold-barred dialog this weekend, feel the same way. . ."spinning" is not lying, poaching votes is not cheating, on-and-on-and-on, in pursuit of ideological goals that overwhelm the principles that get lipservice. :cry: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The COMPQ is now trading below its 200 day moving average in the yearly chart, after touching a Bollinger Band high of 1969. The %K line stochastic peaked and is dropping. The combination of the two technical indicators suggests the COMPQ has some down time coming up over the intermediate term. All we need now is for the 3 day moving average to fall below the 18 day moving average for confirmation. (The 3 and 18 day moving average crossover is one of the short term signals I use.) Support on this down move for the COMPQ may be seen at about the 1852 area, if 1900 breaks over the shorter term. The S&P 500 index is trading at its 200 day moving average in the yearly chart. It touched its Bollinger Band top of 1442 late last week and began dropping. With a falling stochastic and CCI, the index is likely to continue its downward trend for at least a few more days. Support may be seen around the 1110 and 1102 areas over the near term. Until the MACD drops below 0, the up trend that began in August remains, even if the chart breaks the 1110 level. Looking at the Dow Jones Industrial Averages, we could see a bounce higher from the strong supported level of 10,000 when reached which should be early in the week, unless we have an extraordinarily bad news situation develop. Lower Bollinger Band support is at 9975 and may also be seen sometime soon over the next week or two. On a cautionary note the Dow?s 3 day moving average is below its 18 day moving average. This hints that downside pressure may continue for a minimum of at least a few days. The MACD line is now blow 0, suggesting the downtrend began in Feb. will keep the Dow Industrials moving lower over the longer term. It may see the 9800 level before a significant rebound develops. brian4 Posted October 11, 2004 Report Share Posted October 11, 2004 Strange stuff on Gas, I filled up today for the equivalent of $1.87 a gallon in U.S. $'s at @ per litre price of 81.9 cents Canadian minus my 3.5 cents discount for using my gas card. Every Oil Company is offering at least a 3 cent a litre discount to maintain market share. Now our big Oil Companies are not philanthropists by any stretch but Gas here is now cheaper than or depending where you live the same as in the U.S.. Methinks the rising Loonie is part of it but the thought crosses my mind that big Oil is socking it to the American Consumer. The chair was designed in 1928, by the way. The Bauhaus ideal of functionality over ornament was born out of the hardships of Weimar Germany. (See! It ties back to economics) And the flourishes of Art Deco were not appropriate during the economic and political disruptions of the 30's in both the US and Europe. The Nazis actually closed down the Bauhaus fearing it's subversive "cosmopolitan" influences, and preferring a more Arian style (pitched roofs, timber framing, etc). It seems that Nazi traditions have endured in the form of the average American tract home more than anyone would care to recognize.
