An Ant
Iraqi schools turn away from secular teachingsReligious fundamentalism takes root after Saddam BAGHDAD - Four-year-old Beytool Hamid is going to school for the first time, but it's a very different school than her brothers and sisters attended. Under Saddam, schools were militarized and secular. To revitalize the education system, the U.S. has spent $225 million to renovate 2,400 of Iraq's 18,000 schools, print nine million new textbooks and retrain one in 10 teachers. Still, many Iraqis are opting out of the public school system. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6125357/
Mars
Party registration in the US goes back over 100 years to a time when being registered with a party was like joining a gang. A lot of patrionage was attached. Time was in NYC only registered, card carrying Democrats could get the city jobs such as cop or fireman or garbage collection or just about any other high paying occupation. The way the precinct bosses could identify their friends was through party registration and such identification carried with it the spoils of victory. Now some benighted souls might consider that to be a system of graft rife with corruption and so it was. But in those days politicians were the rich men and they made sure the poor folks were fed and had coal to put in the fire place and had jobs (as long as they were registered in the party). Of course the pols were only doing the bidding of the owners and were keeping the proletariat occupied while the owners were busy exploiting them. zensmoke
DJ Fed's Bies: GSEs Pose Big Threat To US Taxpayers NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Federal Reserve Governor Susan Bies said Tuesday that government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) pose a threat to U.S. taxpayers because of their size, aggressive growth plans and lack of oversight. .............................. Bies struck a note of caution about Freddie and Fannie. "If something happens to disrupt their ability to buy liquidity to originate new mortgages there's going to be an impact on mortgage markets across the country," Bies warned. "What I worry about is that these organizations have gotten so large and have such aggressive growth plans...." "If they don't do things right it'll be like the savings and loans," Bies said, referring to the 1980s banking scandal in the U.S., "and every taxpayer will have to bail them out even if it benefits their shareholders." Bies added that "if they want to act like a shareholder company they should privatize and abandon the government." She called for strong Congressional oversight to monitor Freddie and Fannie. The End
Next song up by Zep, Rock & Roll. It?s been a long time since I rock and rolled, It?s been a long time since I did the stroll. Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back, Let me get it back, baby, where I come from. It?s been a long time, been a long time, Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has. It?s been a long time since the book of love, I can?t count the tears of a life with no love. Carry me back, carry me back, Carry me back, baby, where I come from. It?s been a long time, been a long time, Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Seems so long since we walked in the moonlight, Making vows that just can?t work right. Open your arms, opens your arms, Open your arms, baby, let my love come running in. It?s been a long time, been a long time, Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. zensmoke
Nigerian rebels threaten attacks on oil workersForeign oil companies have increased security precautions amid fears of attacks by rebels in Nigeria's Niger Delta region. A group known as the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force says it will attack foreign oil workers. It accuses international companies of neglecting impoverished communities in the oil fields. The Nigerian Army is warning it will use force if the rebels attempt to carry out their threats. Shell and several other companies have increased security. The Niger Delta produces up to 2.3 million barrels per day. The region has been the site of ongoing tension between the oil companies and local activists. http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200409/s1209426.htm
