Ags Nightmare,

Great opening, what a walk down memory lane! :o

Don't know if you read Barron's, but there is an article about another member of the Hall of Shame, Kevin Jamdis, and his current legal woes (being sued by his former marketing head who claims that Jamdis "deliberately misrepresented the research capabilities of Firsthand Technology in its prospectuses.")

September is here.

Hatred and Evil always seem to increase this time of year. Bad for stocks, but that pales to insignificance compared to the horror for humanity as mothers carrying babies into school escorting their children are massacred by laughing animals.

"My mother was terrified, and I thought she was having a heart attack. When I saw my son, my mother ... go unconscious, so tired, so thirsty, I wanted it all to come to an end," she said.

When she asked the rebels for water for her mother, they laughed at her.

Hostage-Takers Laughed as Kids Suffered

Putin declares two days mourning in Russia for Beslan victims of terror. Groups of armed Breslan citizens gather on borders of North Ossetia to avenge hundreds of hostages murdered in school siege, raising tensions in entire North Caucasus.

In tough, fighting televised address to the nation, Putin declared Saturday Russia has the single choice of fighting terror. It will be a cruel war, "but if we surrender, millions will drown in rivers of blood.?

Terrorism is not an internal matter, he stressed, but a direct intervention by international terror against Russia, to counter which advanced counter-terror tactics must be quickly developed. He pointed out that terrorists have a particular interest in destabilizing Russia in order to lay hands on its nuclear assets.

Death toll stands to 330, of whom 155 children, from school siege of estimated 1,200 hostages that ended in bloodshed Friday. More than 550, half children, in hospital were visited by Russian leader early Saturday.

He praised ?incredible courage? of special forces who sustained heavy casualties in unplanned assault. One officer killed shielding two children.

Twenty-seven hostage-takers killed ? 10 Arab al Qaeda members ? three captured alive. Unknown number escaped, possibly with hostages. Not all children and adults from siege accounted for.

Military action followed chain of events. According to one report it was triggered when drivers of bus sent to remove bodies in agreement were killed by booby-trapped body. Hostages panicked, terrorists began shooting and soldiers moved in.

Bush: We pray for victims.

Most governments condemned tragedy, but European Union demanded explanation from Russia on how this was allowed to happen.

well, the guy in charge of the hostage situation was in a tough spot, no doubt. i just cant believe however that any of the kidnappers could be allowed to get away and with hostages no less.

The only strange thing about this report is that they have identified 10 Arab Al Q members among the dead. How do they know? Couldn't they just have been 10 random Arabs who happened to believe in the Chechin cause? (Which is freedom by the way). It's getting a bit tedious to continue to see every terrorist linked to Al Q.

A little history lesson. Chechnya was annexed (conquered) by Russia in the 1860s. They have been fighting for their freedom ever since. During WWII the Germans entered Mother Russia via Chechnya (no resistance). After the war all 880,000 Chechins were sent to Siberia for reeducation. About a quarter million of them died before they were repatriated.

Now when the Soviet Union broke up Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were given their freedom even though they too were conquered by Russia a long time ago. Why not Chechnya? Because if Chechnya was lost the Caucases woud be lost and what is in Chechnya and Caucases? Black gold, oil, Texas Tea.

So what's this all about - always follow the money - always.

Holy cow!

Personal savings rate dipped to .6% in June.

http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/PSAVERT/18/Max

Also, Bush has spent us in to oblivion...

National Debt is now 7.343 trillion with a ceiling set by congress of 7.384 trillion. Only 41 billion to go for the next limit.

Bush and Co. have spent 984 billion since May of last year!

Folks, please move the discussion of this horrendous tragedy to Political Stool. Discussion on M2M should be confined to the market and economic matters.

M2M is not a general discussion forum. I would ask moderators to move off topic posts to new threads on Political Stool or Look Out Below as appropriate.

Well the trend has been going on for over 20 years, due to easy bankruptcy, easy credit cards, and recently super-low interest rates.

But it is also a cultural thing with people living for the moment.

Even with all the easy money available from the Ditech ATM people are spending all they earn plus all they can borrow. Not saving. We consume as much as we can and do not prepare for hard times. The richest country in world but so many are one month and a couple hundred bucks away from poverty. And foreigners own more and more of U.S.

The spendthrift aspect of our culture is a weakness. And the Fed does all it can to encourage this weakness to be taken to extremes. Instead of the average household living in a home they can easily afford with a large percentage equity, and saving for emergencies, and self-sufficiency, we live in houses we cannot afford with little or no equity (spend it away as fast as can get out hands on it), we assume no hard times ever so never save, and we are dependent on a non-disrupted support structure of electricity, water, and police.

This is less true in fly-over country. But turn out the lights and turn off the water and TV in any city and you have a sad situation quickly. And job layoffs lead to drastic lifestyle downsizings within just a few months.

Why do we, as a culture, choose to live on the economic edge all the time?

MH, Don't read that rag anymore...Liked Ableson's cynicism and occassionally you'd get a good article or two, but for the most part it's the same redundancy we see everyday..thanks for the heads up....

Wndy is gonna get a kick out of that one....that was one of Bob Schtinker's favortie funds also...Serve's that POS right...

Another thing I heard on the radio today was shrub touting a new "no money down program" for low income people who want to be "homeowners" and acheive the "american dream" which is basically signing a form that says a bank owns your prperty and your life plus you get a new monthly bill which you can barely afford ...he was also touting that "home ownership" is at the highest level ever ...68 %...I mean "bank home ownership".....

The "irony" of using the words "home ownership" when you buy something that you "owe" 100 % of the value of at closing just blows me away and at the same time pisses me off to no end...this is as crazy as the internet bubble times 10...its taken on the same "addictive" pattern as buying Yahoo at 250...

Our future generations are so fugged...

In the linked image, my home is located roughly at the last "e" in Belle Glade. The southern eye wall is now about 15 miles north of my home as of 12:30 AM ET, and it has barely moved in the last hour. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/radar/loop/DS.p37cr/si.kamx.shtml

The winds are coming from the west hitting the front of my house at the moment. The pounding began from the north early Saturday afternoon. I imagine I have lost most of the trees on my property. I can only imagine what is going on with my cement roof tiles. The longer the storm sits, the greater the likelihood I will suffer some wind and/or flood damage. As near as I can tell from the weather service forecast, the pounding will go on for another 12 hours or more.

I guess I waited too long to put the house up for sale.

Fingers crossed. Hoping for the best. Praying for the safety and well being of the man and his family who boarded up my home and asked to stay for the duration of the storm. I agreed. His name is Angel. Angel is a 52 year old accounting professor from Ecuador, who has worked as a handyman in the US since immigrating here 7 years ago.

Good luck Angel! My thoughts and prayers are with you, your wife and sons. You have done so much to help my 82 year old mother around her home, and now you are taking care of my home as well. You are aptly named.
