Forget 1984, I think Huxley was the more insightful visionary. T-bones (at these levels) I would never buy, but that doesn't mean they can't get power-spiked in a flight to safety play As far as the US-dinar goes, much better risk/reward there....especially, if there is some sort of "situation" It will be great hearing the yammering douches on CNBC talk about the spike in the US-diner at the same time that gold & T-bones are also spiking and schlocks are falling Hilarity, no doubt, is sure to ensue But then again, WTFDIK In the meantime, I'll be hunting out more junkers! First, a Report from the "Ground," so to say, in AC NJ. your jickiss, on impulse, drove from Philly to AC on Friday Night, leaving at 10 pm, arriving AC around midnight. Never, never has AC been so totally empty, and devoid of Players. The situation was far beyond Spooky! Tables were empty! Floors empty. Parking lots Empty. Streets of AC totally Empty. Borad walk totally empty. AC Expressway Empty. Rte 73 Empty. No body has any cash left....Shorty is soooo Right! and When I went back to AC in september,it was the same thing.Looked like Detroit only with casinos.....Totally deserted and getting dumpier by the day.Everywhere I went it was totally empty. Aldous Huxley definitely speaks well to our first world situation, but Orwell's 1984 resonates more powerfully for the 2nd and 3rd Worlders who have geo-political or resource value. Funny, both were reacting off the shock of the compulsary commie regimes in the 1930's but both Orwell's and Huxley's apocalyptic visons resonate most strongly today in our decaying capitalist societies. Plus, Huxley seems to have had a more advanced view of the scientific progression of fascism, drugs and propaganda. btw, Ridley Scott, who's done nothing great lately that I know of, is said to be putting together a remake of Brave New World. His Blade Runner is a favortie, so I look forward to it. Blade Runner is probably my favorite Sci-Fi movie of all time (definitely did Phillip K. Dick justice), so it would be nice to see Brave New World done justice as well. I believe Huxley foresaw the direction society was taking, and drew it out to its (extreme) logical conclusion. As he foreshadowed, the emphasis of society is now on "feeling good" above all else: -- we are encouraged to indulge in escapism of every form, and mainstream medical now condones the most blatant forms of escapism with mood-altering drugs (Prozac, et al) -- our education system increasingly ignores classic thought and literature (after all, these things teach people to think on their own, which can lead to unhappiness and dissatisfaction with current conditions). We've pushed the feel-good mentality so far that my kid doesn't even get A's, B's, or C's, etc.... she gets some incomprehensible report card, filled with cryptic pseudo-grades like "ME" (meeting expectations), because we can't have grades like F anymore, since no one feels good about themselves if they're being lazy and failing. The emphasis is no longer on learning, it's on fitting in. -- we are expected to follow the herd, and are told this leads to happiness for all. Our leaders implore us to accept and support their ideas of a greater "good" and what's "right" for the masses, while progressively minimizing and taking away the rights of the individual. For example, we are supposed to work toward the greater good of "saving the Earth" from global warming, etc.. So why place feeling good above everything else? Because, as always seems to happen throughout history, ours has become a system of two classes: the ruling elite, and the slaves. Slaves don't have any real rights, so the goal of the ruling elite is to try to keep the slaves happy enough that the slaves either a) never become conscious of their condition or b ) don't find their condition unpleasant enough to do anything about it. By predicting a logically possible future, did Huxley prevent exactly that future? He certainly didn't foresee that the entire basis of Western Civilization was flawed and that Asian Communalism would rule the post 1984 world. Involves gun fights over food and a huge last meal of a family where the father poisons the food as he knows that there is no more food. Any one remember it?
